The city of Wittenburg, Germany was home to Martin Luther, who founded the Protestant Reformation. He wrote a series of 95 aspects of the Catholic Church he disagreed with. It was very controversial the time, considering Christianity was the reigning religion in the West. Martin Luther primarily displayed his dismay for indulgences, which were payments provided by Christians to the Church in order to get of their sins. Luther felt that this was an unfair system to those who could not afford to pay the indulgences. He also felt that only those who truly never have sinned deserved salvation. His novel prompted a new branch of Christianity that some still identify with today known as Protestantism.
