Advanced Placement United States History II
Summer Reading Assignment (45 Points)
The summer reading assignment for this course is
American Colossus: The
Triumph of Capitalism (1865-1900)
by H.W. Brands
. The book examines the
impact of industrial capitalism on several important areas of American life.
The book is organized into five parts consisting of 21 chapters. Your work
with this book is as follows:
1.
Dedicate a notebook to summer work and use it to provide a
summary of each of the 21 chapters,
handwritten
and
in your own
words
in 2-3 sentences for each chapter. If the author makes an
argument in any chapter, identify it and provide evidence from the
chapter that is used in support. (21 chapters x 3 sentences = 63
sentences).
This will represent your first assignment grade of the
first term. (21 points)
You will submit your
summer work notebooks
for evaluation on the first day of class.
2.
Use the evidence you have collected in your summaries and any
other evidence from the book to support, modify or refute the
following long essay prompt:
PROMPT:
Between 1865 and 1900, industrial capitalism in America
triumphed at the expense of democratic principles as federal
government policies and judicial decisions became driven more by a
reluctance to slow the engine of economic growth than by a desire to
preserve individual liberties.
Your long essay must appear in 12 point Times Roman font and meet
the six scoring criteria of the College Board
LEQ rubric
. This will
represent your
first assessment grade of the term (24 points).
This
assessment must be submitted before the first day of class to the
APUSHII Summer Work folder in Google Classroom. The APUSH II
Summer Work folder can be accessed using this code:
smayven.
Failure to submit either assignment before the due date will result in
a zero for that assignment/assessment.
