EDUC5410 Child Development Unit 1 Written Assignment University of the People April 12, 2023
Introduction In fact, some of us might not remember schools as they were when we were kids because of how much teaching has changed over the last ten or so years. Along with the opportunities and challenges of teaching, there have also been changes in the attitudes, knowledge, and skills needed to become a teacher. There is a growing degree of accountability and obligation, and it is almost too much of a weight and a distraction from accomplishing the necessary work (Edmonger, 2021). In this essay, there will be a comparison of education between the past and the present, a discussion of the four educational trends which are; increased diversity, increased instructional technology, greater educational accountability, and increased teacher competence (Steifert & Rosemary, 2009), and the rise of instructional technology will be analyzed. Comparison of Today’s Classroom with Classrooms of the Past Using Examples from Experiences as Applicable. Prior educational systems focused mostly on teaching information through books and mathematics. Most of the times, learners are not able to apply the knowledge they have acquired in real-world circumstances, despite the fact that they may be adept in the theoretical aspects of learning. In the modern educational system, the ratio of theoretical to practical learning is maintained. In brand-new schools, the emphasis is still on cultivating an interest in hands-on learning and encouraging an inquisitive mindset. This promotes the growth of a highly inquisitive and creative mind that is equipped to understand complexity from all perspectives (Shekhawat, 2023). Back in the days, the primary concern of an educator was to ensure that we
understood the material and awarding us grades accordingly. Nevertheless, in my environment, we prioritize conceptual understanding above topical knowledge, and we support students' agency by giving them the freedom to choose a course of action and express it. Analysis of Each of the Four New Trends in Education More diversity: Teachers and learners offer a variety of perspectives, experiences, and backgrounds when it comes to the teaching and learning process and it is essential for promoting in learners an attitude of compassion, open-mindedness and compromising with different points of view. A diverse teaching staff gives learners access to a variety of teaching philosophies, subject matter, and worldviews. Young people have a unique opportunity to learn about other ways of thinking and living because to the diversity in the classroom, and if there is no exposure to these many points of view, learners will complete college studies with an underdeveloped worldview for thriving in a multicultural environment (Ayers, 2022). The inclusion of children who might require special learning needs is something that present-day educational institutions consider a priority as well as the diversity of backgrounds. All people have easier access to education. Accountability: This is a technique used to help people perform their responsibilities and accomplish their goals. People or organizations are obligated to provide an explanation of how they met specified commitments with regards to a valid legal, social, moral, or political reason. Stakeholders need to work together in order to fulfill their duties so that an accessible, equitable, and high-quality education will be offered. Because of this, responsibility does not necessarily lie with single

persons. For example, if an educational institution wants to create conducive learning environments, and if they are unable to do that, then the institution relies on governments to supply the required money, instructors to build professional standards, and students to behave appropriately. Teacher s don’t just presume that some learners are struggling with a particular ability without first conducting the necessary tests to demonstrate the learners need for assistance. Increasing teachers' professionalism: Professionalism should exist regardless of how strong the three tendencies are (Steifert & Rosemary, 2009). All employees have to be accountable for performing tasks to high standards and with due recognition and that they must first obtain the necessary training. A higher level of competence has also been supported by educators' hard work to improve their own work. To accomplish this, educators may, for example, engage in action research; a sort of study carried out by educators regarding their students or teaching pedagogies applied in the classroom. In my opinion, I support this educational trend, particularly given that as a volunteer educator I needed specific training to enable me to change my perspective from traditional teaching to child- centered education. This trend really helped me to also improve on my professional growth and provided me with the strategies I needed to apply in my teaching environment. Increase the use of technology in the classroom: The integration of technology in the classroom has really ensured that learners can get access accurate and reliable information within a shorter period of time. Search engines and electronic materials are displacing certain traditional study and research materials. Learners can
get one-on-one help anytime, anywhere, and through MOOCs, hence there is redundancy in the profession of private tutors, as everyone can learn something online. If learners are able to employ these tools for ongoing learning, it enhances their future learning capacity. The epidemic of COVID-19 is quickly highlighting the value of online education as a tool for teaching and learning. Instead of using it exclusively as a crisis management tool, teachers can use online learning as an effective teaching tool by integrating it into current curricula. Why the integration of technology has its challenges and the effective teaching measures will reap the rewards there are when using technology. When utilized properly in the classroom, digital learning technologies can increase student engagement, and educators can be able to develop advanced lesson plans, and support personalized instruction. Moreover, it helps students acquire vital 21st-century skills. Although there is an increase in the integration of technology in K 12 education, some educators still face challenges with regards to its application in their lessons and so they question whether its effectiveness. When deciding how to implement new technology, educators must take into account a number of factors, including the costs involved, usability, and ongoing assistance for proper knowledge and utilization. Common challenges and concerns educators have when implementing technology in the learning environment include learner technology mismanagement, the cost of cutting-edge technology which can’t be afforded by all educational institutions, the time involved, and the training guide on how to kids can be taught to safely use technological tools (Stealey, 2022).
How This All Fit With My Own Pedagogical Philosophy. Beyond a shadow of a doubt, education has advanced significantly since the past. The position that was once considered "the easy job" is no longer in this field. Schools, governments, parents, and educators all have new obligations to fulfill in order to remain competitive. It is clear from a comparison of my educational experience and my current teaching style. Due to my poor grades, my teachers would conclude that I wasn't good enough to go up to the second grade, so I started making sure that every student was in my class. We educators believe in and work for the idea that no child is left behind. I do think technology is the new thing, but I also realize there is the need to educate people on utilizing it properly in order to avoid abusing it. Educators will be able to view teaching through a completely new perspective thanks to accountability and diversity, and I am determined that professional development for teaching staff should be a priority and foremost in all of this.
