Prior to beginning work on this Discussion forum,
1.
In order to start thinking about history, think of a film, video, image,
song, or piece of music that reminds you of an era or event in the
past.
Consider the film, video, image, song or piece of music
that you selected.
Explain why you chose this piece.
Explain what it tells us about the historical event or era it
depicts.
Think about what you want your classmates to know about
you as a person and your academic, professional, and
personal goals.
2.
Next, start thinking about your work for this course, which will focus
on American history from 1877 to the present. One of the primary
areas of focus in the course will be the examination of political and
civil rights of traditionally disadvantaged groups within American
Society and their struggles for social equity within American society.
To this end, you will select one of the following disadvantaged
groups and examine their experiences throughout the course,
culminating in your Final Paper. (Your group choice does not have to
relate to your chosen historical piece above.)
African Americans
Native Americans/American Indians
Women
Immigrants
Consider which group you have chosen to focus on. Why have you chosen
this group? If you are having trouble deciding, which groups are you most
interested in and why?

Hello everyone,
I hope everyone is well today. I am-----------. I am pursuing a degree in
Finance. I live in Vermont with my husband and our two kids. I read fiction
novels in my free time and have been enjoying seeing my kids share the
same hobby as me.
I chose to examine women's history. "
On the Basis of Sex
Links to an external
site.
" depicts one of the vital parts of the history of women's rights. The
film's setting begins in the 1950s. It showed Ruth Bader Ginsburg's struggle
as a woman looking to finish a law degree. Eventually, it led to the
challenges of being a woman while looking for a job as a law graduate.
Towards the end of the movie, in one of Ruth Bader Ginsburg's speeches, she
shared precedences in history, reminders of what progress women have
made a hundred years before her speaking in a capacity of a female lawyer.
She also spoke of what it would mean for the future of everyone's daughters
and sons if the laws that existed at the time were allowed to continue.
Over the past decades, many have fought for women's rights. While many
laws were already abolished due to discrimination based on sex, women are,
yet again, facing another struggle. I would like to look further into women's
history while also closely examining current events.
