Oral History Project Assignment – Minsang.Song G7
M: Hello? Professor My name is Minsang Song, Laurel Springs School G7.
Nice to meet you.
At school, I heard people like Benjamin Franklin and Mark Twain talk
about American education. In what direction do you think education
should go in relation to American education?
P: Hello, nice meet you. Your first question is too deep... um...
I believe that education must first be done at home, schools must change
for nurturing future talents, it is also necessary to build a welfare society
that starts with social education, and education must go in a direction that
must reflect social change in education policy.
M: Currently, I live in Korea and my education is American. Sometimes I
wonder if my parents and I made the right choice. Korea's education
system is good, but since I wanted to study more advanced science or
medicine in the United States, I naturally went to an international school
and entered an American school. What do you think of this choice?
P: Each person has different standards for education and different ways to
learn. But first, as I mentioned, schools must change to foster future
talent. In the future, it can be said that the ability to use a computer will
determine your life. When U.S. and Canadian education administrators
met in Vancouver in 1998 as an educational policy for educating students
to be successful in the 21st century, University of Minnesota Professor Jan
Cogan recommended that students have the following skills:
1. Ability to see problems as a member of internationalization
2. Ability to work cooperatively with others and take responsibility
3. Ability to understand, accept, and tolerate other cultures
4. Ability to think openly and systematically
5. The power to peacefully resolve conflicts of opinion or conflicts
In response to federal policy, Washington State is also promoting linking
technology and education reform.
1. Combination of technology and education
2. Securing public awareness and support
3. The school's network connection
4. State government policy support and securing financial resources
5. State distribution of sleeping stock
6. Linking technology and teacher education
etc. will be promoted. Since then, education has changed very rapidly.
Minsang student is now living in Korea. However, Minsang is now receiving
an American education. It was impossible just 10 years ago. Parents'
awareness of homeschooling was also lacking, and most of the
perceptions were that Korean students must graduate from school in

Korea to get a job and that Internet education is not acceptable. However,
at a time when technology has advanced and it is difficult to travel abroad
due to the corona virus, Minsang's parents must have been very worried.
However, the current school is recognized as an official school in the
United States, and after completing education, Minsang can apply to
American universities. Minsang's parents found a way for Minsang to
receive an American education, a way to study in Korea, where they could
study on their own with an advanced online education method. The way
we teach today is changing.
M: Where should education start?
P: Of course, education must start at home.
Parents are responsible for educating their children, and the patriarchal
culture must be abolished. There is an appropriate time to learn a foreign
language, and travel requires parents to enlighten their children about life.
Parents should also learn about educating their children, and since art
enriches life, parents should teach their children music, art, and physical
education.
M: You said that social education is necessary to create a welfare society,
but Benjamin Franklin rationally criticized and tried to correct the unequal
treatment and discrimination of Americans by the British. Please tell us
what he thinks about educating people with disabilities in relation to
inequality.
P: In the case of the United States, there is a special education law, so a
lot of research is being done at the federal level. Starting with the
establishment of educational facilities and free access for the disabled
through educational programs, it is equipped with various convenient
facilities so that the disabled can work, and youth, the elderly, and
minorities can also work. Educational opportunities are provided for
different types of disabilities, as well as support programs such as physical
therapy. In addition, school buses come to your doorstep, and children
whose first language is not English have the right to bilingual education.
M: You said that education policy should reflect social change. Is there any
education policy that reflects social change in the US?
P: School consolidation must be flexible, and the school-level and school-
level bundle system according to the local population of Washington State,
Seattle's public kindergarten system, Oregon's suburban school system,
an alternative school system that accommodates parents' needs, and

homeschooling, etc. A variety of educational and school systems exist in
the United States. And furthermore, as online classes have become
common in Korea due to the corona virus, interest in homeschooling is
also affecting foreign school admissions.
M: Thank you for speaking today. Lastly, I would like your advice on the
attitude I should take along with the American education system.
P: Minsang has great parents. During the coronavirus pandemic, such as
the rapid changes in education reality and society, and disasters, we have
faced education that is concerned about sociality. In such a reality, with
the advanced online education method in the United States, I hope that
Minsang can do what you want by doing coding, math, and medicine
studies that Minsang wants with American teachers in a strong bond with
parents and a lot of love. Thank you.
