1. Go to Ch. 7 in your online textbook. Take notes on the major domestic and foreign policy
crises of the Washington and Adams presidencies (e.g., Whiskey Rebellion, Alien and Sedition
Acts, Jay’s Treaty, XYZ Affair) and assign a letter grade (A–F) to each president for how well the
crisis was handled.
The revolutionists had two great leaders George Washington's warfare tactics and
charisma, and that, Benjamin franklin was a great diplomat Whiskey rebellion was
made to protest against taxes- sparked debate Federalist passed alien sedition an
naturalization acts which sparked as constitution crisis Washington, A - His charisma
alone could Justify a B but when combined with his expert handling of political affairs
due to his associates during a time of immense strife is easily worth an A. He unified
our nation and paved the path for our future endeavors Jay's treaty - royal navy
attacked American ships Haitian revolution - french revo inspired a slave revolution
The french revolution divided the U.S Adams, B - although his charisma can't be
understated, I think it's average among presidents. Public perception is extremely
important. He didn't unify the people like Washington. If I could give Washington a
150% A+ and Adams an A I would.
For each event, a paragraph justification must be given explaining the grade. Following this
activity, write a ½-1 page answer to the following question:
“To what extent were Washington and Adams effective in dealing with the domestic
and foreign policy crises that erupted during their presidencies?”
I think Washington did a great job. Immediately after being elected, he put two
foreign policy precedents in motion. He assumed leadership of treaty negotiations with
hostile nations/tribes. And even asked for congress's approval after finalization of the
treaty. After he sent American emissaries for negotiations, the French revolution sent
waves across the world. During this time, he didn't want to ally with France because he
wanted neutrality. The British decided to seize ships that were trading with France.
Including any ships with the American flag and to solve this he passed the Jay treaty. In his
final years as president, he had a treaty with Spain that dominated his foreign policy. John
Adams was confronted with many problems resulting from the French Revolution.
Although he was very popular initially after the French revolution, concerns festered
among the conservatives. However, more problems resulted from the war rather than the
revolution. He made treaties to improve the U.S. British relations which France interpreted
as a betrayal of itself. Thus began an even bigger foreign politics issue. This was known as
the XYZ affair.
