TERRORISM HISTORY

“What are some of the common threats or trends in terrorism events of the last 50 years?”
Terrorists operating within the United States as well as those operating outside the
country will, for the foreseeable future, be a substantial threat to the United States. Terrorists will
keep developing new methods and perfecting the ones they already have, which will only make
the threat they present in the future even more severe. Although the scale and destruction of the
attacks on September 11 were unprecedented, they did shed light on certain trends in worldwide
terrorism that the intelligence agencies of the United States had observed in recent years (
Jones
et al 2020)
.
Since the 1980s, it had become abundantly evident that the devastating potential of
terrorist activities was expanding, but the attacks that took place on September 11, 2001
constituted a significant acceleration of this trend. The truck bombings of United States and
French military bases in Beirut, Lebanon, on October 23, 1983, were the deadliest act of
terrorism that had occurred prior to the attacks on September 11. These bombings resulted in the
deaths of 295 people. When compared to the attacks on the barracks in 1983, the number of
fatalities that occurred on September 11 was more than ten times higher.
Following the attacks of September 11, terrorist organizations all around the world
adopted a new strategy of randomly striking innocent targets. The vast majority of the almost
3,000 people who lost their lives were simply bystanders. In addition, this was the very first time
that terrorists from another country had used a suicide attack against the United States (
LaFree,
et al 2020)
. The truck bombing that took place at the World Trade Center in February 1993 was
the last successful act of international terrorism to take place in the United States until September
11.
