IAAF History
The International Amateur Athletics Federation (IAAF) was established in 1912 in Stockholm, Sweden. Founded by 17 national athletics organizations, the IAAF's mission was to act as a governing body for various track and field competitions. This included managing world records, overseeing international competitions, standardizing technical equipment, and overseeing the sport's rules and regulations. Its headquarters have been based in three different cities throughout its history: Stockholm (1912 - 1946), London (1946 - 1993), and Monaco (1993 - Present).
The organization only oversaw men's athletic events in the early years of its history. A separate organization known as the Federation Sportive Feminine Internationale (FSFI) was established in 1921 to oversee women's events. In 1936, the IAAF incorporated women's events and assumed the responsibilities that had previously been held by the FSFI.
