Community Health – Week #3 Harm Reduction Student workbook Let’s Explore Harm Reduction in the Community! Please list examples of programs in place to reduce harm that you have noted throughout the community. 1. Safe injection sites for injection drug users 2. Needle/syringe distribution 3. Fentanyl test strips 4. Naloxone Hint if you can’t identify them independently please take a look at the Durham Region Public Health website link attached below. Take a moment and explore the programs and nurses role. Video sessions Please view the videos shared to further explore the introductory concepts associated with harm reduction: public health policy, concepts & tools. The third video explores Insite – Canada’s only supervised injection site! Harm Reduction: Concepts & Tools (3 min) https://www.coursera.org/lecture/drugs/video-3- harm-reduction-concept-and-tools-wYqKu How Public Health Policy Addresses Drug Use (7 min) https://www.coursera.org/lecture/drugs/video-2-how- public-health-policies-address-drug-use-kHFAZ Insite: Not just injecting – but connecting (27 min) https://youtu.be/rOax9hge8pY Your nursing assignment for the week… You have been hired by the Durham Region Public Health Department as a Public Health Nurse. You are assigned to work as a member of the Harm Reduction taskforce. This program supplies safe injection materials to those in need to reduce the harms associated. The team is preparing to propose increased funding and access needs for the regions substance use - harm reduction programs. A debate will be held with the council members as well as members of the community next week. It is your role to prepare for this
debate by creating a presentation detailing the following; (a) 3-5 substantiated (evidence informed) facts to support the implementation of a harm reduction needle exchange program in our area. Debate the Pro’s! AND (b) 2-3 substantiated (evidence informed) reasons to not support the implementation of a harm reduction needle exchange program in our area. Debate the Con’s! By exploring both sides of the debate this will help you properly respond to questions and answer with an evidence informed position when you present next week. References for the points presented must be included. I have compiled a number of resources to help you get started but please explore outside of the attached documents as well. Once you have compiled your points to present please create a powerpoint presentation detailing the Pros & Con’s behind this debate. Once complete please submit to the dropbox titled “Harm Reduction Debate”. Reflective Practice Once you complete the debate assignment above please take a moment to answer the following questions here to participate in reflective practice. Short answer format is appropriate this does not need to be a formal reflective note. (1) Consider your perspective or views related to harm reduction before completing these modules, then compare now that you have the education to formulate an informed decision. Has your perspective changed – if so how? I was not familiar with harm reduction safe injection programs prior to completing this assignment and viewing the modules. I now have a better understanding of how they operate, and the benefits and risks associated with them. I know that injection drug use is prevalent in the Durham region, especially Oshawa. I am glad that I have knowledge about this topic and the services available in the Durham region for injection drug users. (2) What is your most monumental take away from the research completed this week? The biggest takeaway from the research I’ve completed, is that there are benefits and risks to many interventions and treatment programs. However, it is important to determine whether the benefits outweigh the risks. In this case, the benefits of a harm reduction safe injection site outweigh the risks associated with it. There is strong evidence to suggest that many injection drug users can benefit from a harm reduction program. Not only can it benefit injection drug users, but the community as a whole.
