IHP 510 Module Four Worksheet
For this task, focus on a specific product or service within one of the healthcare organizations you selected from the worksheet (the Mayo Clinic, Johns Hopkins, or the Cleveland Clinic). You will complete
a SWOT analysis to determine the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats to that specific product or service. Do not alter the worksheet or submit the assignment in the form of an essay. Replace bracketed text with relevant information. For this and all worksheets, you are not required to include a cover page. You are expected to provide in-text citations for your sources and a reference list at the end of the worksheet. Based on your SWOT analysis, you will then propose an additional service or product
to market for the organization, while also comparing it to a competing healthcare organization’s service or product. This task is designed to provide practice for the situational analysis, service proposal, and competition analysis that you will complete as part of Final Project Milestone Two in Module Five. To complete this worksheet, first review the module resources. Next, review the following webpages. Select one
of the organizations and one
of its product or services to analyze:
Mayo Clinic: Products and Services
Johns Hopkins Medicine
Cleveland Clinic: Institutes and Departments
Complete the following sections for the organization’s service or product that you chose. Replace the bracketed text with the relevant information.
Part I. Complete the SWOT for the selected organization.
1.
List at least 3 strengths
and explain what makes them strengths.
Johns Hopkins Hospital, a non-profit establishment located in Baltimore, Maryland, is renowned for its excellence in healthcare (Johns Hopkins Medicine, n.d.). One of its flagship departments, the Sidney Kimmel Cancer Center, was founded in 1973 (Sidney Kimmel Comprehensive Cancer Center, 2021). The center boasts of several strengths that make it a leader in cancer care. Firstly, it offers treatment for more than 24 different types of cancer, providing a comprehensive approach to diagnosis and treatment
(Johns Hopkins Medicine, n.d.). Secondly, the center employs state-of-the-art treatments, including CAR-
T, which has positioned it as a leader in the treatment of bone marrow and blood cancers (Sidney Kimmel Comprehensive Cancer Center, 2021). Finally, the Sidney Kimmel Cancer Center spans across 35 departments and 5 schools at Johns Hopkins University, allowing for the direct application of research to
improve patient care (Johns Hopkins Medicine, n.d.). This unique setup enables the center to provide cutting-edge cancer care that is informed by the latest research in the field.
2.
List at least 3 weaknesses
and explain what makes them weaknesses.
Johns Hopkins Hospital is renowned for its top-notch medical care. However, the hospital has a few weaknesses that deserve attention. Firstly, being a teaching hospital has historically meant that the cost of care is higher compared to other hospitals. Teaching hospitals charge more for care to offset the costs
of research and teaching programs. This has put JHH at a financial disadvantage compared to larger competitors that are not teaching hospitals (Ayanian & Weissman, 2019). Secondly, the hospital has faced negative attention in the past, including allegations of harvesting stem cells from poor African American patients without their consent for medical research purposes (Klaidman, 2010). Lastly, the decentralized nature of the hospital system can sometimes present challenges for the coordination and quality of patient care (Liu et al., 2016). Despite these weaknesses, Johns Hopkins Hospital remains committed to providing world-class healthcare to its patients.
3.
List at least 3 opportunities
and explain what makes them opportunities.
Johns Hopkins Hospital cancer program has several opportunities to expand its service offerings and make a positive impact on the community. Firstly, the hospital could consider offering expanded telehealth appointments, not limited to just primary care appointments. This would allow patients to receive cancer care remotely, which would be especially beneficial for those who live far from the hospital or face mobility issues (Johns Hopkins Medicine, n.d.).

Secondly, JHH could expand its proton therapy radiation to more than just one location in Washington, D.C. This would make this highly specialized cancer treatment more accessible to patients across the region.
Lastly, JHH could expand its community outreach and education initiatives to reach a broader population. This would help educate people on public health concerns and treatments while also serving
as a marketing and advertising strategy to reach target patients in the community. These opportunities would help JHH provide even better care to their patients while also making a positive impact on the community.
4.
List at least 3 threats
and explain what makes them threats.
Johns Hopkins Hospital faces several threats that could affect its programs and expansion efforts. Firstly, funding is always a concern for non-profit organizations, and JHH is no exception. Running out of funding could limit the hospital's ability to expand its programs and services throughout the region.
Secondly, being understaffed is a threat to JHH. The organization has historically faced staffing shortages, which have only been exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic. Inadequate staffing is a chronic issue within the nursing profession, with the safety consequences of understaffing likely being exacerbated by the pandemic (Andel et al., 2022). Lastly, JHH needs to improve its reputation in the local community of East Baltimore. Tensions are high between citizens and the hospital system, and poor, underserved communities tend to think that the hospital has ill intentions towards them. This is a significant threat because the input of local citizens and communities has a significant impact on the success of an organization. JHH needs to take steps to show that it supports and cares about its community. Addressing these threats will be crucial for JHH to continue providing world-class healthcare to its patients and serving
the community effectively.
5.
After completing the SWOT components for the chosen organization, address the following:
What additional service or product would you propose to market for this organization? Why?
Johns’ Hopkins cancer program could benefit from utilizing artificial intelligence (AI) to improve patient outcomes. Computer-aided diagnosis (CAD) is a broad concept that integrates image processing, machine learning/deep learning, computer vision, mathematics, physics, and statistics into computerized techniques that assist radiologists in their medical decision-making processes (The University of Chicago, 2023). The University of Chicago hospital is already utilizing AI to shorten OR wait times, detect diseases, assess cancer risk, and more. These techniques also yield virtual biopsies in which
computer-extracted characteristics of lesions and normal surround can be used in radiogenomics studies
(The University of Chicago, 2023). By mapping histopathology and genomics to anatomical images from mammography, ultrasound, and MRI, cancer discovery studies can be conducted. Implementing AI in cancer care would be a significant benefit to Johns Hopkins and help boost its already robust capabilities. Patients would benefit from this technology, which would make it easier and quicker for them to access the care they require. Utilizing cutting-edge technologies like AI is crucial for hospitals like JHH to continue providing world-class healthcare to its patients.
In making your proposal, identify a competing healthcare organization’s similar service or product—
one that you think is effective. Below, identify the service/product and briefly describe why you feel it
is successful.
Be sure to apply instructor feedback on this worksheet task to your Final Project Milestone Two, due in Module Five, especially the sections on the situational analysis, service proposal, and competition analysis that you will need to consider when completing your final healthcare marketing and communication plan.
