HLTWHS001: Assignment 1 What you have to do The assignment for the unit HLTWHS001 Participate in workplace health and safety has (9) descriptive answer questions covering all the elements of this unit of competency. You may use examples from personal and /or social experiences if relevant to the question. Question 1 What is the difference between a hazard and a risk? A hazard is anything that could cause harm.   And, risk, is a combination of two things – the chance that the hazard will cause harm and how serious that harm could be . A hazard could be   A toxic substance in the workplace would be a hazard. It could be classified as a highly hazardous substance. The risk of a worker accidentally ingested the substance, since it's toxic, it could make them seriously ill. Question 2 Briefly explain a ‘residual’ risk The   residual risk   is the amount of   risk   or   danger   associated with an action or event remaining after natural or   inherent risks   have been reduced by risk controls. Question 3 Identify 3 possible causes of stress in the workplace. Poor personal relations with colleagues, management, and clients + Bullying, harassment, victimisation, isolation, or lack of acceptance of a staff member in the workplace. We have had a few issues with the new employment of Orthoptists. The communication was suffering with all orthoptists. Each individual was out for themselves and not taking into consideration the needs of the whole team and how their actions affect each other. The work load for the new orthoptist was heavy and she was in control of the patients testing. This resulting in attitudinal changes including low morale, cynicism and loss of interest in work. Manger had a meeting individually with each staff member and then as a whole and talked about ways to support one another. Question 4 Sources of workplace safety information can be both internal and external. List an example for each. Internal- Coaching involves training staff, and encouraging them throughout the learning process. Verbal and written responses to verbal, pictorial or physical scenarios. Verbal – meetings, focus groups, safety representatives • Seminars External- Conduct an WHS training needs assessment for workgroup members, that takes account of legislative and regulatory requirements, internal policies and procedures, existing skills. Safety and health consultants. Question 5 Provide two (2) examples of emergency response procedures that your department has established. These 2 examples I have submitted have been but together by myself with the Practice Mangers guidance- Please see attached the action for both of the following emergencies. 1) Emergency Coordinator Action Plan 2) On the discovery a person is missing Question 6 Briefly explain why you need to keep a register of injuries. What information would you include in this register? These reports are used to identify, compare and prioritise workplace safety issues when planning your work. Your workplace also generates reports and statistics you can analyse for the presence of hazards in the workplace. In WorkCover form you need to record and complete injury information: As an example of the Register of Injuries: you can draw up your own injury register, however, it must include the following: (a) name of the injured staff member (b) the staff member's address (c) the staff member's age at the time of injury (d) the staff member's occupation at the time of injury (e) the industry in which the staff member was engaged at the time of injury (f) the nature of the injury (g) the cause of the injury. 2 LA022576 Assignment 1, HLTWHS001 Ed18 © New South Wales Technical and Further Education Commission, 2017 (TAFE NSW – OTEN), Archive version 1, July 2017
Question 7 Explain how good housekeeping assists you in reducing the likelihood of injury or harm within the workplace. An untidy workplace can cause injuries, in particular injuries resulting from slips and trips, therefore good housekeeping practices are essential for all workplaces. For example: spills on floors should be cleaned up immediately walkways should be kept clear of obstructions work materials should be neatly stored, and waste should be regularly removed. It will be much easier to keep the workplace clean and tidy if it is well laid out with space for storage and for the movement of people. Our work area at the front desk is very limited- that’s why we are very diligent on cleaning and having clear path ways in and out of the area. Having a tidy area is less stressful for us and easier to find documents and stationery. Question 8 How would you maintain your knowledge and keep yourself updated with the safe work practices in regards to workplace systems, equipment and processes. It is important to maintain your knowledge of WHS legislative, industry and organisational requirements. By using a range of sources of information, you can remain up-to-date with legislation. This information can then be communicated to others in the workplace so they are aware of and can find out more about legislative changes. Health and safety specialists who can provide members with safety information and give advice on addressing safety problems. Training: many unions run courses on different aspects of safety within the relevant industry. For examples of safety information and services provided by unions visit. Question 9 What procedures (check list) would you implement to identify hazards and risk assessment? When checking the workplace for hazards an effective means is to develop and use an itemised checklist(s) in accordance with work procedures Check the workplace for hazards and risks using an itemised checklist Basic hazard identification procedures such as workplace inspections and review of workplace data Hierarchy of risk control and its application Principles of basic risk assessment Personal protective equipment (PPE) requirements including use, storage and maintenance taking initiative to address hazards and manage risks at a systemic level Noise Workplace harassment LA022576 Assignment 1, HLTWHS001 Ed18 3 © New South Wales Technical and Further Education Commission, 2017 (TAFE NSW – OTEN), Archive version 1, July 2017
