I believe that the idea of prayer prior to surgery can put pressure on the patient and the medical provider because of their personal beliefs, and cultural background. Patients may share the same religious beliefs as the healthcare provider which makes them feel a sense of relief which can greatly help with the emotional aspect of getting a serious medical procedure done. Professionals of different religious backgrounds may experience pressure to adjust to a practice that doesn't apply to their beliefs.
It is important that healthcare providers be aware of the religious diversity among patients. Some patients believe that a strong assurance on prayer will make procedures go easy or
make them feel safe, and as expected pressure can arise if patients feel that their cultural or religious preferences are not respected. Healthcare professionals should respect their patients’ background, cultural and religious beliefs and try to contribute to the peaceful environment that should be provided for every patient. Patients should feel free to express their preferences and concerns without fear of judgment. However, some patients may prefer to keep their spiritual or religious practices private. According to UW Department of Bioethics & Humanities article, “spirituality and medicine”, “Many physicians and nurses have intuitive and anecdotal impressions that the beliefs and religious practices of patients have a profound effect upon their existential
experiences with illness and the threat of dying.” ;Addressing the patients’ spiritual or religious beliefs begin by fostering open and honest conversation with the patient. Respect the patient's need for privacy and dignity and encourage them to share their religious or spiritual beliefs, values, and any specific practices they would like to include into their healthcare experience. If the patient expresses a desire for specific religious rituals, prayers, or spiritual practices, make every effort to make them feel welcomed, respected and open to inclusivity.
