Unit 1 –Introduction Greetings everyone, My name is Whittley, I’m a mother of three beautiful children (2 girls & boy), and my husband and I just celebrated our 13 th anniversary. I relocated from Florida to Kentucky two years ago and really enjoying the environment. I’m attending Purdue Global to obtain a Bachelor’s degree in Healthcare Administration, due for graduation this December (Woohooo). I will be re-enrolling to Purdue Global to obtain a Master’s of Science in Applied Behavior Analysis. . I’ve been in the healthcare field since the tender age of 15 (roughly 17 years), I’ve always had a love for helping people and knew healthcare would be the field for my career. My sister and I have also decided on owning an ABA facility. I’ve always wanted to become a therapist of some sort growing up. I have worked with mentally and physically challenge people when I entered the workforce in 2004 and would like to keep my focus within that group of people. Best wishes to us all this term! Unit 1 – Discussion Greetings All, The expense of healthcare in the US is among the highest in the world. Spending on healthcare in the United States in 2021 was $4.2 trillion, or nearly $12,900 per person. Other wealthy nations only charge roughly half as much for healthcare on average per person. According to the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, healthcare spending would increase by 5.1% in 2023 from $4.2 trillion in 2022 ( National Health Expenditure Projections 2022-2031 , n.d.). According to a 2023 study by the Peter G. Peterson Foundation, population growth, population aging, and rising healthcare costs are the three main causes of price increases. The cost of healthcare services often rises faster than the cost of other products and services in the economy, and prices are another important factor that influences healthcare spending in the United States. There are numerous potential causes for that rise in healthcare costs, including: New, cutting-edge medical technology may result in better, more expensive procedures and products. Administrative waste in the insurer and provider payment systems may result from the complexity of the American healthcare system. A lack of competition or even a monopoly may result from hospital consolidation, giving providers the chance to raise rates ( Why Are Americans Paying More for Healthcare? , n.d.). Additional variables are mentioned in an earlier report by the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA), which also mentions the rise in chronic illnesses and the rising cost of health insurance (Dieleman et al., 2017). According to (HealthManagement.org, n.d.) most experts agree that improvements in medical technology are responsible for between 50%-70% of annual cost increases. It is clear that advances in medical technology are the main cause of rising healthcare expenditures and consequently, insurance premiums. The processes by which new medical technology affects healthcare costs include significant advancements in the clinical ability to treat previously incurable acute conditions, such as coronary artery bypass grafts, and the development of new treatments for previously incurable terminal conditions, such as long-term maintenance therapy for the treatment of conditions like diabetes, end- stage renal disease, and AIDS.

Excessive health spending and growth may result from a number of factors, some of which are subject to policy intervention and others of which are not, including but not limited to population growth, demographic changes, changes in disease prevalence, changes in use, and changes in service price and intensity Slower than the nominal growth of the gross domestic product (GDP), which is anticipated to have been 9.2 percent, the forecast increase in national health spending from 18.3 percent in 2021 to 17.4 percent in 2022 (Keating & Ewing-Nelson, n.d.). The consumer price index for all urban consumers has increased by 66% since 20 years ago, while the particular index for medical care prices has soared by 85%( Healthcare Spending Will Be One- Fifth of the Economy Within a Decade , n.d.).
