1. Describe the daily functions, responsibilities, and the jurisdictional aspectects of the career. A)Daily functions: Maintain Public Safety, Enforcing the laws, preventing and responding to criminal activity, ensuring the well being of individuals and property within their jurisdiction, provide a sense of security to the community they serve. B) Responsibilities: Patrolling assigned areas, Responding to emergency calls, conducting investigations, making arrest, issueing citations or warnings when violations of the law are broken, work closely with other law enforcement agencies, emergency services, collaborate with community organizations and members on crime prevention initatives, maintain a safe environment for everyone, engage in community outreach efforts, fostering positive community relationships with the community members , promote trust and cooperation between law enforcement and the public they serve. 1) Describe a situation in which each style of policing (watchman, legalistic, and service) woud be used in the career field. A) Watchman Style: A situation where a police officer might user this style of policing is wdhen they are doing riots. As our text book puts it, Officers use persuasion and threats, or evens “hassle” or “Rough up” to disruptive people, instead of making formal arrest. (Demsey, Forst. Carter, 2018). During a riot or protest is happening, police officers are normally outnumbered by the public who are out. Although they could arrest some of the individuals who are being disruptive out in the public, I think that the
goal with this style woud be to show force and being disruptive will not be tolerated. B) Culture Base On Watchman Base Style: What can be inferred from a watchman style based culture of a police department is that they exercise a great deal of discretion and ignore minor violations, especially those involving juveniles and traffic stops. These types of departments are also generally found in the working class communities with a partisan mayor city council forms of government (Dempsy,Forst,Carter, 2018). C) Legalistic Style Situation: A scenario where legalistic style policing would be ised in the career field is if a department or city had a zero tolerance for certain traffic violations. For example, if people are continuously running stop signs by a busy school intersection, and the parents and the community would want the police to enforce the traffic laws for the safety of the children, the officers would then have to post in the area waiting for the violaters to come through and stop them to catch them and enforce the law by citing them and not just giving them a warning. D) Culture Based on Legalistic Style: Our text book lets us know that this style of enforcement occurs in reform administrations government styles. This style can also occur in the aftermath of a scandal in a watchman type department that results in the hiring of a “reform” police chief (Dempsey,Forst, Carter. 2018).

E) Service Style Situation: This service style of policing is a style more of an educational based approached rather than going straight to arresting or siting or siting someone that really does not need one. Here is an example. If a teens are out after the public posted hours just hanging out, they would be tresspassed and given a ticket and possibly two of them. But, an officer using this style of policing would see that they are not doing anything wrong than being at the park after hours. The officer would use this as a teaching moment and let the kids go with a verbal moment instead of citing them with a ticket and they might not have the money to pay that ticket so it may lead to more issues in the long run. F) Service Style: This type is generally found in more in affluent areas of the United States. There is little to no crime crimes in these types of areas to where they would have to use the other types of policing, watchman and legalistic styles. The officers in this style of policing would more than likely be happy going to work and work shifts that are normal and consistent. Explain the recruitment and candidate vetting process for the career. Career fairs, social media campaigns, and community outreach are examples of recruitment strategies. In order to better represent the community they serve, agencies seek to draw in a carried pool of candidates Cordner & Scarborough,2017). The vetting process is a necessary part of recruitment for many employers and is used to verify a candidate's background information and determine if they're a good fit. There are several ways that a company can conduct the pre-screening process, from interviewing to verifying educational certificates.
Basic Application / Prescreening Questionnaire,Written Exam / Entrance Test which has the following : The written exam is typically a standardized test used to assess general aptitude and does not require or assume any knowledge specific to law enforcement. Written exams typically test an applicant’s :reading comprehension, problem-solving / judgment skills, memory, writing skills. Some agencies or state POSTs offer study guides to assist applicants preparing for the exam. Alternatively, there are private sector publications available online and at local bookstores that are designed to help with test preparation. Video Exam During video exams, applicants watch a scenario and provide a verbal response that is rated and scored. These scenarios cover various topics designed to assess an applicant's interpersonal skills and judgement. Physical Fitness / Ability Test Law enforcement has physical demands, and employers are keen to ensure their recruits are fit to serve. Applicants can expect to take some sort of physical ability test during the hiring process. Agencies typically use a fitness test, a job simulation test, or a combination of both. A fitness test measures a candidate’s overall level of fitness through structured activities that assess strength, endurance, and cardiovascular health. Job simulation tests are designed to measure your ability to perform certain job-specific tasks such as running stairs, dragging a weight, or climbing a wall. While each agency
sets its own minimum requirements, with enough training and determination, anyone can achieve success. Background Investigation A thorough background check will be conducted to ensure that you do not have any personal or professional issues that would preclude you from police service. Background investigators will review your employment history, character references, academic records, residency history, criminal history, and credit history. A background investigation typically includes a fingerprint check and interviews with those who know you, including previous employers, school or military personnel, neighbors, and family members. Drug Testing Drug tests are routinely administered to check for the presence of illegal substances. Each agency establishes the type and frequency of testing. Psychological Testing Just as agencies want to ensure you are physically fit for the job, they also want to ensure that you are psychologically stable and mentally fit to handle the job. This

evaluation is typically made through written psychological exams and may be supplemented with an interview by a psychologist. Psychological testing serves two functions: to evaluate your character and emotional make-up and to ensure you are well suited to the job from a psychological standpoint. Polygraph Many departments use a polygraph test, commonly known as a lie detector test, to verify information submitted throughout the application process. Oral Board The oral board is a chance for members of the hiring authority to meet and talk with you face to face. Oral interviews serve as a chance to discuss your qualifications and gauge your fit with the agency. During the oral interview, you may be evaluated on your: Communication skills,Understanding of and interest in policing as a career,Response to questions and scenarios. Medical Exam This physical exam will evaluate if you are medically fit to meet the physical requirements of the job. Specifically, you should be able to perform the “essential job functions” as listed by the employer. A typical medical exam may include the following elements: Height, Weight, Vision,Hearing,Chest X-ray,Blood test, Urine test, Blood pressure, Electrocardiogram, Screening tests for illegal drugs. Most law enforcement agencies have vision and hearing criteria, as well as criteria based on specific diseases
or conditions. The specific requirements vary by agency and what is acceptable by one department may not be by another. Explain which theory of policing (Evidence-Based, Preventative, Reactive, Problem Solving) is best exemplified by the career and provide rationale. Describe the theory. Evidence based policing is the concept that says police practices should be based upon scientific evidence about what works best for each department. The theory values statistical analysis , empirical research, and randomized controlled trials. The goal of evidence based policing is to increase the application of scientific testing, targeting, and tracking of police resources. (Telep , 2018) Explain why the theory is best exemplified by the career. The theory of evidence based policing and the career of crime analyst correlate by both collected data that helps progress police officers work lives in a positive way. The analyst relies on the data to give officers and their superiors reports on crime patterns, trends, hot spots, series, and long-standing issues. They both offer more efficient ways to police in an area.
