Identify at least one individual intervention technique and one community intervention technique
you would use in the immediate aftermath of a large-scale disaster.
Large-scale disasters can have profound and extensive impacts on both communities and
individuals, frequently surpassing the capacity of those affected to recover and adapt. One such
approach that may be applied in the aftermath of a catastrophic disaster is Psychological First
Aid, which is a research-based approach that is grounded in the fundamental principle of human
resilience (Shultz & Forbes, 2013). The primary objective of this intervention is to assist
individuals in managing and recuperating from distressing circumstances, including those arising
from traumatic incidents, natural calamities, public health crises, or individualized experiences.
Barboza states (2005) that the implementation of behavioral techniques, including meditation,
can facilitate individuals in assessing their level of safety and mitigating the risk of secondary
traumatization. Additionally, long-term interventions, such as psychotherapy, have the potential
to offer assistance in this regard. The Community Crisis Debriefing is an additional response
technique that is community-based and implemented following a significant tragedy. The process
involves convening all affected community members to engage in dialogue regarding the tragic
event, exchange narratives, and articulate emotions. According to Barboza (2005), this particular
approach can instill a sense of security, provide individuals with necessary resources, facilitate
social connections, and foster optimism about the future.
