This week’s assigned chapters from the textbook list different types of crises and large-scale
disasters. Briefly discuss two or three different types and give examples. What are the
implications of each type for individuals and for the community?
A developmental crisis arises when a typical life event reaches a critical point, leading to a
significant life shift that may induce heightened levels of anxiety. James and Gilliland (2017)
suggest that a developmental crisis arises due to a sudden and considerable alteration, which
elicits an atypical reaction.
Existential crises are characterized by their distinctiveness concerning purpose, freedom,
responsibility, and commitment (James & Gilliland, 2017). These crises often involve internal
conflicts or concerns. The situational category of crisis emerges as a circumstance that surpasses
the individual's ability to exert control over it. Unforeseeable occurrences encompass natural
disasters, vehicular collisions, and disturbances. A situational crisis has the potential to impact
both individuals and societies as a whole, often resulting in profound, intense, and catastrophic
consequences. Adversity has the potential to foster a sense of unity among individuals as they
unite to assist and then engage in the process of reconstruction.
