In unit 9 we read Chapter 9 titled, Depression, Despair, and Health. The chapter
talks about depression in multiple forms, some treatment includes taking
medication, discuss some of the other nonpharmacological suggestions you feel
could be beneficial for someone experiencing different levels of depression.
There are many different things people can do that would benefit their mental health
before they start seeking professional help. The first intervention would be to adapt a
healthy diet and exercise, as it’s been known to help relieve stress and improve your
mental health. Since a social support system is important for your mental health, setting
out time to be with loved ones is equally important for someone’s mental health. Even
with medical intervention, counseling or therapy is extremely helpful before someone
has to be prescribed medication to help regulate their emotions.

In Unit 9 we watch a seminar film, Facing Mental Illness, which acts out the
problems associated with mental illness treatment. What are your thoughts on
these problems of mental health treatment. What could you see as some
possible solutions?
It seems the biggest issue with mental health right now is the systems priority being a
reaction rather than being proactive. In the emergency rooms, they are more focused on
physical illness and not mental health, leaving a lot of patients untreated and eventually
in an unsafe place. In the law enforcement aspect, police officers aren’t trained properly
to deal with people who suffer from mental health and may not react as the regular way
a person might. Both of these together make it hard for people who suffer from mental
health to find the help they need and to stay off the treat. Some ways to combat these
issues could be to have a number of case managers working closely with emergency
room patients who may have not received the immediate care they needed to get better.
As a justice system, adding mental health and crisis intervention education to the police
force can help when coming in contact with them.
3. In Unit 10, we read Chapter 6, Locus of Control, Self-Esteem, and Health. Discuss if
you see your self having more of an internal or external Locus of Control and Why?
How important is Self-Efficacy to you and where do you see it in yourself. How can you
help clients with their Self Esteem and Self-Efficacy?
4. In the Changing Lives video, Why do you think people can't accept substance abuse
as a disease? What are your thoughts about the validity of these types of treatment
centers and why? What are your thoughts on the Project Safe Program? In what ways
could you help clients to avoid relapsing?
