1. What is CPOE (Computerized Patient Order Entry)? Explain how CPOE can transform and
improve patient care.
[200 words or more]
-
CPOE stands for computerized physician order entry. This refers to the process of
providers entering and sending treatment instructions. Some of these instructions can
include medications, laboratory, and radiology orders all done electronically instead of
the old process which consisted of paper, fax, or by telephone. Computerized patient
order entry is important for many reasons. One of these reasons is to reduce errors and
improve patient safety. CPOE has helped many organizations to reduce their errors
because everything is typed which eliminates an error being made due to something not
being legible. Another aspect that reduces error is that CPOE comes with built-in clinical
decision support tools which will flag any drug interactions, medicinal allergies and other
problems. Efficiency is also another aspect that is important. CPOE ensures that
providers submit orders electronically making everything become much faster. This can
range from getting faster labs, medicine, radiology order etc. One last aspect of CPOE
that caught my attention was that it helps improve reimbursements from insurance.
Specific orders are required to be pre-approved from insurance plans. CPOE flags any
orders that need pre-approval which can in turn help you to not get denied. All of these
are aspects that have and will continue to improve patient care.
2.
What is (Picture Archiving and Communication System)? Explain how PACS is transforming
and improving diagnosis and patient care
-
PACS is a medical imaging technology that is mainly used in healthcare organizations to
securely store and digitally transmit electronic images and clinically-relevant reports.
This system eliminates the need to manually file and store private and sensitive patient
information. Thanks to PACS, medical documents can now be safely accessed from
anywhere in the world using the PACS software. Nearly all of the major medical imaging
equipment manufacturers and medical IT companies offer PACS. The major way that it
has transformed and improved patient care is that different clinics, hospitals, etc can all
have a patient's records and tests within seconds. No more having to wait days before
something is mailed over or faxed over to another office. With this you can run tests and
have them sent over somewhere within minutes of having results.
