5.1 In-Class Activity: Last Statistic to Find!
Study Suggests Correlation Between Heart Health and Optimism
State the variables represented in your article. Why do you think the researcher
selected these?
o
Optimism and cardiac health are the variables that have been reported in this
study. To examine the potential relationship between positive psychological
factors and physical health outcomes, the researchers selected these variables.
Which one is independent and dependent? Why do you think this way?
o
Optimism is the independent variable in this study. The dependent variable is
cardiovascular health. Optimism is an independent variable because it is a factor
that is manipulated or measured. Cardiovascular health is, however, a variable
that depends on the outcome to be measured.
Was the data positively correlated, negatively correlated, or neither? What does the
correlation coefficient tell you about the relationship?
o
Data from this study showed a positive correlation, suggesting that the likelihood
of perfect cardiovascular health was enhanced when optimism levels increased.
The correlation coefficient determines the strength and direction of a relationship
between two variables. The positive correlation coefficient shows a clear positive
relationship between optimism and cardiovascular health in this case.
Keeping in mind that correlation does not imply causation, in your article, was one
variable the cause of the other?
o
The article makes no indication that one variable caused the other because
correlation does not indicate causation. Nonetheless, the results point to a
connection between cardiovascular health and optimism, which may mean that
one factor influences the other.
Based on this correlation analysis, would linear regression appropriate? Why or why
not?
o
Based on this correlation study, it may have been suitable to use linear regression
to examine the association between cardiovascular health and optimism.
Researchers would be able to forecast future outcomes and evaluate the direction
and strength of a relationship using linear regressions. Further study would be
required if linear regression was to be employed in this situation.
