Specific task instructions
For this assessment event, you are required to demonstrate the skills required to provide
first aid in a range of education and care settings. To do this you must complete three
practical skill demonstrations in a TAFE NSW classroom:
1.
Basic life support (adult, child and infant)
2.
First aid incident response and report
3.
Managing illnesses and injuries.
Each practical demonstration requires you to respond to one or more first aid incident
scenarios. For Parts 1 and 3, these scenarios are included with the instructions and
Observation Checklists on the following pages. For Part 2, your assessor will provide you
with a scenario card relevant to your work role or context. You will not see this beforehand
to reflect a real-life situation.
For each demonstration you will work cooperatively in pairs with a classmate and will take it
in turns at being the person who is being assessed and the person who is playing a support
role.
These practicals will be observed by your Teacher/Assessor and used as part of the overall
evidence requirements of the unit. You should refer to the list of criteria in the Observation
Checklists on the following pages to understand what you need to demonstrate. All the task
assessment criteria must be met.

Part 1: Practical – Basic life support (adult, child and infant)
For this part of the assessment you must demonstrate your skills in providing CPR on adult,
child and infant manikins.
•
For the infant scenario you must demonstrate the single rescuer technique and CPR
must be conducted on a firm surface.
•
For the child scenario you must demonstrate the single rescuer technique and CPR
must be conducted at floor level.
•
For the adult scenario, both single and multiple rescuer techniques must be
demonstrated, and CPR must be conducted at floor level.
When demonstrating the multiple rescuer technique, you will work cooperatively in pairs
with a classmate and will take it in turns at being the initial first aider on the scene, and the
second first aider who arrives later with an AED.
You will have up to 15 minutes to complete this part of the assessment
–
5 minutes for the
adult CPR, 5 minutes for the child CPR and 5 minutes for the infant CPR. Your assessor will
provide instructions throughout this assessment. You need to listen and respond to these
instructions.
Demonstration 1: Adult CPR
You arrive at your workplace to find a co-worker collapsed on the ground in the carpark. A
small group of staff are gathering at the scene. The casualty is not moving and does not
respond when people call out their name. A colleague suggests that the casualty should be
moved off the road into the shade and asks you to help them do this.
Demonstrate how you would respond to this situation using DRSABCD. The following
equipment/resources will be provided:
•
Adult CPR manikins
•
AED training devices
•
Associated CPR hygiene products and consumables, including resuscitation barrier
devices.

Part 2: Practical – First aid incident response and report
For this part of the assessment you must demonstrate your skills in responding to a
simulated first aid incident by performing the correct first aid procedures and providing an
accurate written report of the incident.
You will work cooperatively in pairs with a classmate and will take it in turns at being the
first aider (the person being assessed) and the casualty. Your assessor will perform the role
of a paramedic at the end of the incident.
Your assessor will provide you with a scenario card relevant to your work role or context.
You will not see this beforehand to reflect a real-life situation. Please read all the
information on the scenario card before you begin your demonstration.
Once you have finished performing the correct first aid procedures for the scenario you must
provide a verbal report of the incident to your assessor, who will act as a paramedic, and
debrief about how you performed, how the incident could affect you and others, and how to
get help if it did. You must then complete an accurate written report of the incident using
the ‘Injury, Illness or Incident Report’ form
on the following pages.
You will have up to 15 minutes to complete this part of the assessment
–
5 minutes for the
first aid response and 10 minutes for the incident report. If your assessor provides
instructions or asks questions during your demonstration you must listen and respond.
The following equipment/resources will be provided:
•
Roller bandages
•
Triangular bandages
•
Basic wound dressings
•
Personal protective equipment (PPE)
•
Thermal blankets (or similar) for treatment of shock
•
Workplace first aid kit.
