Provide a summary of your article. Include the name of the newspaper and author, as well as date of publication. Include data that supports the significance of the topic. For example, related deaths, health care costs, demographic information. During NR503, we have discussed the determinants of health, at-risk groups, social justice theory, outcomes, inter-professional collaboration, advocacy, and other concepts related to epidemiology and population health. How do the concepts addressed in NR503 relate to your article's topic? Provide definitions and examples in your writing. Integrate information from the World Health Organization and the SDG's. In April 2020, a 22-year-old female who was incarcerated since she was 15 years old was released from prison. On June 1 st 2021, Jessica Contrera told the Washington Post the story of how a 15 year old sex trafficking victim was arrested for murder and trialed as an adult. Alexis Martin was 15 years old when she was involved in a robbery which ended in a murder. The 15 year old grew up in a broken home with her mother incarcerated and experiencing sexual abuse from her step father. She also was a victim of rape by a 21 year old at the age of 10. Alexis ran away from home regularly and was on probation for fist fighting with her sister. She went to Cincinnati with her drug dealer who she was unable to pay back. She started calling him dad because he treated her like a daughter and took better care of her than anyone ever had, however, he soon began to sexually and physically abuse her. As time went on Alexis started being sold to other men for sex. She eventually found someone who would help her plan to escape for her abuser. The plan involved Alexis bringing another girl to her “dads” house to distract him while she was sexually abused by his son. When the time was right Alexis had the man who she met come into the house and commit a robbery. The robbery turned into the murder of her “dad” and she was arrested for murder. The prosecutors ignored the signs of her being a victim of sex trafficking even when she admitted to what her “dad” had done to her and what he had made her do. The judge ended up charging her as an adult and she was sentenced to 21 years in prison. While in prison Alexis received support from multiple different resources who wanted to help her case, such as Kim Kardashian who did a documentary on her case. Sex trafficking began to be more noticed and changes were being made to protect these victims even more than before. Alexis appealed her case in 2016 and 2018 and lost both appeals. In 2019 her case went in front of a parole board and although 3 did not want to let her free, 8 people did. Alexis was let “free” on the condition that she would remain monitored electronically and by a parole officer until 2034, she would be 36 years old. Alexis was a interracial young girl who often got into trouble and suffered a traumatic childhood, unfortunately there are many more like Alexis. According to the CDC, individuals who traffic target people who are poor, vulnerable, living in unsafe situations, or looking for a better life. Although men and boys are affected as well, most victims are women and girls. Human trafficking and sex trafficking are both very under reported and there is a large gap in research regarding death rates. Advocacy is providing support or speaking out for a specific cause. In this case, the justice system and law enforcement failed to advocate for Alexis. It is important to recognize victims of sex trafficking and advocate in order to get the victim help. It is also important to advocate and raise awareness for the
cause in order to ensure the public is aware of how serious this issue is. Sex trafficking is a serious public health concern and it effects individuals, families, and communities as a whole. Victims include individuals from all genders, race, ethnicities, and income. The use of social media has been used in victim seeking by perpetrators. Sex trafficking has just recently become a serious topic with extensive research being completed in order to save victims. There is a gap in surveillance for sex trafficking because it is often not reported, individuals may not be caught, or they unfortunately victims never have the chance to get help. The SDG stands for Sustainable Development Goals. The SDG objectives for 2030 have encouraged Protect Us Kids Foundation to support efforts to fight for the end of human trafficking. SDG 5 is to achieve gender equality and empower all women and girls, in 2016 20,000 trafficking victims were women and children. Although trafficking involves all genders, women and girls are more frequently effected. Human and sex trafficking is a world wide population health concern and efforts need to be made in order to protect the public health.
