1 Study Notes for Module 1 A. Glossary of key terms and concepts In the table below, list at least 10 key words or concepts along with a concise and accurate definition. Try not to “cut and paste” definitions. 1. Learning: relatively permanent change in person’s performance while executing a motor skill. 2. Motor Learning: processes involved in acquiring and refining motor skills 3. Motor Control: Focuses on the neural, physical and behavioral aspects of human movement. 4. Voluntary Movement: Movements that are performed intentionally or at will. 5. Serial skills: Skills that are a combination of a series of discrete skills 6. Open and Closed skills: skills performed in an unpredictable environment; skills performed in a predictable environment 7. Regulatory Conditions: conditions or factors that specify the necessary movement characteristics to perform a skill 8. Action requirements: Requirements in terms of body movements and object manipulation while performing a skill 9. Initial Hypothesis: only one motor ability is required for all performances 10. Specificity Hypothesis: different motor abilities are required to perform different skills. 11. Task analysis: this analysis helps in determining the fundamental abilities that are important for successfully performing a skill. 12. Motor abilities: traits or genetic traits that are a pre-requisite for performing a skill.
2 B. Key concepts Describe at least one key concept discussed in the module. Use a chart, table, figure, or skeleton outline that helps to explain or summarize and organize a large amount of information from the chapter readings and lecture. You are being marked on content and usefulness of the work as a study aid and not the quality of the presentation. Below is a mind-map / flow chart for the key concept of Motor Abilities . This mind map / flowchart describes the development of the concept of motor abilities and how it has led to the creation of taxonomy. Motor Abilities are genetic traits that are a prerequisite for skilled performance. The development of these hypothesis, led to the creation of a taxonomy by Fleishman, whose purpose was to classify skills. In this taxonomy Fleishman came up with 2 categories: 1. Perceptual Motor Abilities 2. Physical Proficiency Abilities. Specificity Hypothesis: Individuals inherit a large number of motor abilities, and those abilities are independent of one another. Challenging the existence of a general motor ability led to: Initial Hypothesis : Only one motor ability is required for all performances.
3 C. Your Own Notes While listening to the lecture and reviewing the chapter reading, take your own notes in this section. Consider looking at different ways to take notes that can help your learning (the Cornell method, the outline method, the mind map, bullet journaling, flow notes).

4 Self-assessment: Complete this self assessment by ticking one box in each row (you will need to double click on the box, and a separate window will pop up if you’re using Word). Time management Completed on time Late but before the Dropbox closed Completion Effort all sections complete one section incomplete >1 section incomplete my best effort significant effort fair effort insufficient effort this time Originality I studied enough to think about the material and generate ideas I studied enough to understand I cut and paste and will have to learn the material later
