Components of Corrections 1 Christopher Ramirez Rasmussen University J115/CJC1000 Introduction to Corrections Professor Richard Wright January 6, 2024
Components of Corrections 2 In this paper, I will be discussing the components of corrections. The components will be Jails, Prisons, Probation, and Parole. I will also explain the functions of the four components and describe two unique elements of each component of corrections. The definition of jail is a facility operated by or for a county just for the confinement of people accused or convicted of an offense. (2022, Texas Administration Code) Jails are also in the county run by the elected Sheriff and are often located in the community. Jails are facilities that hold misdemeanor offenders who have not been convicted in court. Jails are the first point of entry into the criminal justice system. (Texapedia, 2020) Two unique elements of jails are Intake and custody. Intake is a function that serves a vital public safety function and assesses high-risk individuals who pose a threat to the community. Custody is depriving people of their liberty while they wait for pretrial detention and punishment. The definition of a prison is an institution under federal or state jurisdiction. It is a confinement of individuals convicted of a serious crime and will be there for a year or more for a felony. (Cornell Law School) Prisons are for those already convicted of a crime and are sentenced. Two unique elements in prisons are Retribution and Deterrence. Retribution is to punish people who have committed a crime, and the justice system enacts the punishment. Deterrence is deterring
Components of Corrections 3 individuals who have committed crimes and to prevent them from committing them in the future. The definition of probation is a sanction that the court orders, and individuals who have been found guilty of a crime are put on this and are typically supervised by a probation officer. (Criminal Justice Degree Hub) There are two different types of probation, which include people who served some time in jail, then got out and finished on probation, and another is being on probation rather than going to jail. Two unique elements of probation are that they support the person on probation and try to get their life back on course, and the other is helping them with services they may need. The definition of parole is only granted after the individual has served a portion of their prison sentence, and it is a privilege, and the offender has to abide by certain terms and conditions. (Justia, 2024) Parole has been a concept of the corrections system since the 1800s, and it prevents overcrowding in prisons. One unique element of parole is the offender can have their home searched at any time without a warrant. The other is if the offender violates the conditions of parole, they can be revoked and re-imprisoned.
