MY COMMUNITIES 1 My Communities Leah Guilefuss St. Petersburg College HSC 3201: Community Health and Epidemiology Professor Frazier October 15, 2023
MY COMMUNITIES 2 My Communities In the world there are many different types of communities, ranging from occupational to personal. Community means a body of individuals who are identified by common interests, experiences, or values (Seabert et al., 2021, p. 5). Within communities, people meet new friends and partners but within a community it can also bring hurt, devastation, and broken friendships. The two communities I am involved in are the February NICU Babies 2022 community on peanut, and Pinellas County Moms group on Facebook. The first community I belong to is the February NICU Babies 2022, I joined this community when my second son was in the NICU. I had never experienced this before and let me say it’s hard. I wanted to get with other moms who have been in this situation before, and or going through it so I didn’t feel alone in the process. This community has brought both positive and negative effects to my health, but I have learned that it’s okay for others to have their opinions. When I think of the negative effects it had on my health mentally it was rough because sometimes people would comment or say things that made me feel like a bad mom. For example, I had another son, who was home with my mom and husband. I had posted long day in the NICU headed home to see my other baby, and this mom commented you’re leaving your son alone that’s horrible. As a mom, seeing that made me feel sick physically and mentally it messed with my head. Those were the types of negative effects, which these beliefs within the community played a factor in affecting my mental health. Now, on the positive side I made so many mom friends who were in my shoes that helped me with my mental health at the same time. The mom’s who backed me up with the bad comments who were in my shoes as well with another child. For example, the number of nights the moms in the group stayed up and vented through
MY COMMUNITIES 3 facetime, and it made us all realize we are okay, and so are the babies. It really helped us mentally and physically to know that us moms were there for each other. Secondly, the Pinellas County moms group now this is a totally different ball game. Within this community everyone is faced with different cultures, values, morals, beliefs, environments and much more. This community can be harsh, blunt, and sympathetic all in one, and somedays leave you speechless. This is where any mom in Pinellas County can go to ask questions, vent, post funny memes of parenthood and ask for babysitting services. There are a couple things that can change about this community because I see it a lot, and its monitoring of posts for bashing moms, making sure that only females are allowed in the community as some men has snuck in, and making sure moms feel safe in this community. The Pinellas County moms group positively affected my health because I go on here to read other moms’ posts and sometimes, I find good information that puts me at ease. Being a mom to two small boys and one with medical issues it’s hard to feel like I’m not doing it right. I even comment on posts to put other moms at ease if I have been through it. I met one girl through here who watches my boys, and she has taken a physical burden off me. My husband travels for work, so she comes and takes them once a week so I can get rest and do things for myself. This has helped my mental and physical health so much. The negatives haven’t really affected my mental and physical health because I’ve learned from the NICU community that everyone has the right to their own opinions. In conclusion, all communities can have positive and negative effects on mental and physical health. There are many factors that play into that, and it can lead to meeting new friends and partners but within a community it can also bring hurt, devastation, and broken friendships.
