Operational definitions break down behavior in observable and
measurable terms that allow behavior analysts to identify the target
response. Although I have never personally written an operational
definition, I have experience working with BCBAs to construct an
operational definition for a client that I have worked with in the past.
This client was new to the clinic at the time, and for the first couple
weeks I was asked to observe his behavior and write down things I
noticed. The BCBA also informed me of potential behaviors the
client engaged in based on his intake assessment. I noticed this
client engaged in severe self-injury behaviors and aggression and
notified the BCBA to target these behaviors. When assisting in
constructing the operational definition, I informed the BCBA of what
I observed during each instance of self-injury and aggression. I also
assisted in creating examples and nonexamples for these
behaviors. We then formed two operational definitions based on the
target behaviors, and I began tracking the frequency of each
behavior in my session. I can improve on my operational definitions
in the future by ensuring each definition is detailed and precise to
avoid misinterpretation. I can also clearly describe each example
and non-example of behavior, and ensure each definition includes
functional or topographical outcomes that affect the behavior. This
will ensure that the operational definition conveys what the behavior
looks like or what function the behavior serves. Hi Valeria, I was also very familiar with various operational definitions as an
RBT I also think it is important that the definition is functional in
Karlie, Great work discussing your experience with operational definitions. Even though you did not have previous experience writing them yourself, it does sound like you have some experience working with BCBAs to construct them. Further, you did a nice job providing suggestions for how you can continue to grow in this area.
