The course on ethics and human subject protection was very enlightening and informative. I was able to gain a more in-depth knowledge about ethics, historical events that have affected how research is carried out, and how to manage, avoid, and resolve problems involving unethical behavior in studies. To guarantee the integrity of the study and ensure protection to the participants, it is essential to conduct research trials in accordance with ethical standards. The Nuremberg Code, Declaration of Helsinki, and Belmont Report are also discussed throughout the course. These were established to provide protection to the human subjects and allow for the participants to be fully informed of the study including the risks and benefits ensuring their participation is voluntary. The hospital I am employed with does not specifically conduct research that involve human participants; but the network I work within is HCA Florida. Through their HCA Healthcare Research Institute (HRI), they conduct multispecialty patient-centered clinical research to improve patient care and create scientific breakthroughs. This institute is comprised of 150 research professionals across HCA Healthcare dedicated to advancing clinical research (HCA Healthcare Today, 2023). HCA HRI centralized research services serves as a valuable partner and liaison between research study sponsors and network of sites, offering study start-ups and clinical oversight (HCA Healthcare, n.d.). With the start-up; assistance with site selections, budget, agreements, and Institutional Review Board (IRB) submissions are provided. Within HCA there is an ethics and compliance committee that sets forth policies and procedures to all companyaffiliated facility run IRBs. Policies such as required protection for vulnerable participants, informed consent requirements, and registration and reporting to the United States Government in accordance with federal law. A couple hospitals such as, HCA Florida Mercy Hospital and HCA Florida JFK are affiliated with the Western Institutional Review Board, Inc.
