This discussion post has two parts. Part 1: Continued Quality Improvement The United Stated has had the highest health care costs in the world, but the quality of care has been ranked at the bottom of the industrial countries. The Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act has prompted high quality of care with lower costs. Over the past decade, health care organizations have striven to meet various quality measures. However, there is still a long way to go. In your initial post,
Discuss the evolution of the quality improvement movement from the global perspective. Describe the relationship between health care quality and continuous quality improvement. Support your response with at least two scholarly sources published within the last 5 years. For guidance, use the Scholarly, Peer Reviewed, and other Credible Sources Links to an external site. resource. Part 2: Accreditation Accreditation is an external review process that allows health care organizations to demonstrate their ability to meet regulatory requirements and predetermined performance standards established by a recognized accreditation entity. Even though accreditation is voluntary and has fees associated with it, there are financial and legal incentives for health care organizations to seek accreditation. For this part of your discussion, you have been assigned an organization to research (see the list above). Review the information on your assigned accrediting organization based on your last name, and address the following: Describe the organization, including the mission, programs, and services. Identify benefits to obtain accreditation from your assigned accrediting organization. Select one accreditation program from your assigned accrediting organization, and explain why it is important. Your initial post of Part 1 and Part 2 should be a minimum of 500 words. Guided Response: Review your classmates’ posts, and provide a substantive response to at least two of your classmates who have been assigned to a different accrediting organization. In your peer replies, identify interesting facts, differences, or similarities presented by your classmates. Each response must be a minimum of 100 words. You are encouraged to post your required initial post and replies early each week to stimulate more meaningful and interactive discourse in your discussions.
Part 1: Continued Quality Improvement Discuss the evolution of the quality improvement movement from the global perspective. From my understanding of the course reading, the evolution of quality improvement originated in Japan after WWII in the manufacturing industry. What started off as quality improvement in manufacturing later spread beyond this field. The concept of quality improvement was built on the knowledge of Japanese leaders in business, science, and the military, and it was led by Deming utilizing his own concepts and those of his colleague

Walter Shewhart (Johnson & Sollecito, 2020). This concept would then the industry not just in Japan but also in many other nations across the world. Shewhart and Deming had both advocated a statistical approach to quality, but the Japanese were the first to widely adopt these concepts by both product and service firms in Japan (Johson & Sollecito, 2020). In the 1960s and 1970s, the slow adoption of this concept spread to the United States and Europe, but the large-scale adoption did not occur until the 1980s and this was primarily in manufacturing. Overall chapter 1 in the course reading is a really good read and covers a ton of information regarding the evolution of quality improvement in many different industries and how it evolved into the health care industry. Looking at figure 1.1 in the course text gives evolutionary context of quality in health care. It also displays on the timeline when the Joint Commission was established in this evolutionary time period of quality improvement. Describe the relationship between health care quality and continuous quality improvement. Although CQI is frequently referred to as a significant management breakthrough, the field of health services research has been working on similar issues for years. “Continuous Quality Improvement (CQI) is a progressive incremental improvement of processes, safety, and patient care” (O’Donnell, 2023, para. 1). Health care quality is defined as “the degree to which health services for individuals and populations increase the likelihood of desired health outcomes and are consistent with current professional knowledge” (Allen-Duck et al., 2017, para. 17). With that in mind, I would say the relationship between the two would be described as CQI being a basis or foundation while health care quality is the product or outcome subsumed under the concept of CQI. Health care quality in CQI but is tailored to bettering the health outcomes for patients. Part 2: Accreditation Describe the organization, including the mission, programs, and services. My assigned organization is the Accreditation Commission for Health Care (ACHC). This organization is an accrediting body for health care organizations and serves customers throughout the United States. Their mission is (“Accreditation Commission,” n.d.): “Accreditation Commission for Health Care (ACHC) is dedicated to delivering the best possible experience and to partnering with organizations and healthcare professionals that seek accreditation and related services.” This organization offers a wide range of accreditation programs and services such as behavioral health accreditation, ambulatory care accreditation, hospice accreditation, pharmacy accreditation and much more. They offer certification, webinars, educational tools for accreditation and more. For example, if you further research on their website you will see that under educational tools, they offer a book for $49 that is an accreditation guide to success with a distinction in telehealth.
Identify benefits to obtain accreditation from your assigned accrediting organization. Some of the benefits gained upon obtaining accreditation from my assigned accrediting organization are listed below: Get 24/7 access to program-specific resources via ACHCU, their educational division. An organization will benefit from consistent operational efficiency and will be better prepared to deliver high-quality patient care. ACHC’s industry-expert Surveyors will conduct a review of your organization’s operations every three years (two years for clinical laboratories) to help you maintain excellence and a culture of continuous improvement. Up-front, flat-fee pricing (ambulatory care accreditation program) NO annual fees (assisted living accreditation program) We offer the TIME solution to fast-track your process from application to the final decision (ambulatory surgery center accreditation program) Select one accreditation program from your assigned accrediting organization and explain why it is important. An accreditation program from my assigned accrediting organization is the assisted living accreditation program. This program is important because families are placing their trust in organizations to care for their loved ones who need assistance with day to day activities in caring for themselves. Therefore, this accreditation is important to have as Assisted Living Community Accreditation confirms compliance with standards of care, safety protocols, and applicable laws, rules, and regulations (“Accreditation Commission,” n.d.). Having this accreditation could also be a deciding factor for families when making a decision to choose an organization to go with.
