"Obesity, in general, is a term used when someone is overweight, taking their height into
account as well. Being overweight can be unhealthy and could potentially alter the vital
functioning of other organs in the body, posing serious health risks and comorbidities.
Nearly 3 in 4 adults and 1 in 5 children in the United States are overweight or have
obesity (DHSS, 2023). The U.S. government, under different administrations, has
created initiatives, interventions, and policies to combat obesity and overweight issues,
while promoting healthy weight. However, the real question is, are they doing enough?
Former First Lady Michelle Obama, during the Obama Administration, initiated the 'Let's
Move' campaign, which focused on childhood obesity. This initiative was dedicated to
solving the problem within a generation so that children born today will grow up healthier
and be able to pursue their dreams (DHSS, 2023). My research indicates that the Trump
and current Biden administrations have not clearly outlined their goals for combating
obesity. However, they have implemented initiatives to improve overall health and
promote physical activity.
If given the opportunity, what I would do differently is make fruits and vegetables more
affordable. One of the main reasons people choose overly processed foods over
healthier options is financial capability. If I am on a budget and processed foods cost
more than healthier options, I would naturally choose the more affordable option.
Additionally, I would examine trends in other western developed countries and conduct
research to see what they are doing differently. For example, in Amsterdam, there is a
significant emphasis on walking and bike riding, which helps increase physical activity."
