Reply to Discussions Discussion #4 Hi Owen, After reading the article, I learned that fat cell is a hormone-secreting tissue and other materials which have harmful effects on the body's metabolism, health, and weight. Although I knew about body fats, I didn't know that excess body fats may be poisonous since it may lead to diabetes, stroke, hypertension, and sometimes cancer. People should get rid of excess fats to prevent obesity, which can destroy their health. The article suggests that fats are far from inert; this was due to leptin discovery, which helps in brain-fat communication and regulates the amount of fats in the body. Everything you’ve mentioned is so true! Women are exposed to health problems due to the fat deposits in the abdomen called visceral fats, which is risky. Surgical removal can get the visceral fats out of the body, depending on where the fats are situated. The article is essential because it gives information on the effects of fat cells on the human body, and you’ve summarized the article perfectly! Discussion #9 Hello Andy, Great insights! I enjoyed the information you have added in your assessment about different types of parasites and their impacts on humans. I agree that the plasmodium parasite is one of the harmful parasites that cause Malaria, which has killed millions of children and adults around the world. It is important to be informed about different types of parasites and be aware of preventive measures. The case of fish tapeworm shows that parasites are dangerous and can deprive the body of important nutrients and cause health issues. I agree that the article was interesting and frightening since it shed light on fish tapeworm and how it can cause anemia symptoms in humans. I also learned more about fish tapeworms, including their survival mechanism and long shell life, which can be dangerous. Discussion #12
Hi Bryan, I agree with your assessment that many people with the illness blame themselves and their lifestyle for their health condition. Shame and guilt can have a strong psychological stronghold on people who refuse to seek treatment and support from their loved ones. I agree that when people get sick, they blame themselves for the many years they have been careless about their addictions, eating habits, and lifestyle and that they see their illness as punishment for their bad choices. Also, societal judgments can play a big role in shame and guilt, worsening the conditions of people’s health. I agree that having a positive outlook and accepting realities can bring a different outcome in people’s lives. The article is personal and Cook shows how shame precipitated her mother’s illness and how she denied her addiction to cigarette smoking as the cause of her emphysema. I agree with Cook that societal judgment and public opinion increase the shame and denial in some patients since they blame themselves for whatever they are facing and may decline treatment and change in lifestyle since they believe they deserve the illness and punishment. Shame and guilt can have a strong chokehold on our emotional and psychological life and can hinder people from accepting realities faster. Discussion #27 Hi Maximillian, I agree with everything you’ve mentioned! The article was very informative. We have all heard about germs and their presence in every aspect of our lives. We are always trying to avoid them, fearing these ambient, putative disease-causing agents. The author explains how obsessive we can get to be but eliminating them is such an impossible task. I mean, we can reduce them, but there will always be more and more every time- bacteria are an undeniable part of our world. Roach outlines the conditions in which germs could be considered harmful, impacting only those who are "very old, very young (under six months), or very ill." After this coronavirus situation, we have gotten paranoiac, eliminating every possibility to get sick, or even worse, die because of having the deadly virus. It is essential to stay calm during these conflictive times we are facing.
