After this class, I will be taking one more course to complete the requirements for
graduating with a
Masters in Emergency Management and Disaster relief. I have not decided on
the course to take yet, but I would like one in recovery. Most of the classes that I have taken dealt
with preparedness, response, and disaster mitigation. Although some have discussed the recovery
process after the disaster, none have addressed the phase in detail. The course on recovery
interests me because even though responding to, preparing, and mitigating disasters is essential,
what happens after the disaster is vital. Every emergency responder should be equipped with the
necessary skills to help the recovery process effectively. The course will provide me with
knowledge on reducing vulnerability to future disasters, reducing stress-related illnesses due to
the financial burdens resulting from a disaster, and helping in rebuilding damaged structures. The
skills and knowledge from the course will help advance my career in the future.
The obstacle I foresee in the course is maintaining a work-education balance. I have been
taking the course while working part-time. It can be challenging to maintain a balance between
class work and the work-life. Thus, maintaining a balance is one of the challenges I foresee in the
class. I will deal with the obstacle by creating a schedule and ensuring that I follow it. A schedule
will help me allocate time to all the tasks I have to do in a day and ensure that I balance the work
and the class time.
The course that I would like to see offered in the public health class is helping disaster
victims deal with the stress emerging from the disaster. Many of these victims face financial
burdens and lose their loved ones which are stressful. Understanding how to help them can
effectively equip emergency responders with skills to help in the recovery process. The course on
promoting mental well-being will improve the recovery process of the disaster victims. As an
3
emergency responder, I would like to help save lives and promote the emotional well-fare of the
affected. Thus, I believe that a course in promoting the victims' mental well-being is important
for all emergency responders.
I will be graduating after completing one class with a Masters in Emergency Management
and Disaster relief. My main objective is to get a job with FEMA, where I will utilize my 25
years of experience in the Navy and my education. Having worked with the Navy, I have been
part of emergency responders, and I understand the process I am involved in disaster
management. Getting a masters in emergency management and my skills from the Navy will be
essential in dealing with disaster management at FEMA. The skills and knowledge I have gained
have helped me have a clear goal about what I need and where I want to be professional. Thus,
the only assistance that I would request is continued support as I complete my class. I am
grateful for the interaction I have had in the different classes.
