They are caused when the sun and

This tends to happen on a full moon and new moon.
For
example on a full moon the high tide is 6.1 ft and on a new moon 6.7 ft.

think the range between high tide and low tide is greater in this phase?

The greater spring tide occur during a new moon and full moon.
I think it has to
do with the gravitational pull between the sun and moon.

High tide happens at least twice a day, usually every 12 hours and 25 minutes
and for other places usually every 24 hours.
This happens because the sun and
moon are on constant movement causing the tides to change.
