Lab 1: Plate Tectonics Online Supplement Student Name: Nicole Maxey (For TA Use) Raw score_____/30 Points______/100 To complete this online supplement, find supplied materials in eLC in the folder titled Lab 1: Plate Tectonics and Oreos, which include the power point you will use in class and may reference for this activity. Use a word processor to modify this file and type in your responses. Whatever word processor you use, save your work as a PDF or Word Doc and upload it to eLC. Write down questions that develop and ask your TA during your lab time as scheduled for the normal meeting time of the lab or via email. Familiarize yourself with the slides in eLC and watch any videos linked . Linked videos are in your slideshows AND on this worksheet. Answer the quesions below to receive credit. Items are not necessarily in order, so you will have to do some searching and remember where you have found things and go back to them. Earth’s processes are going on all day every day. Some we can readily see in action, and others are occurring slowly enough that human observations are not adequate. The big picture of how our earth works starts with the broad idea of plate tectonics. The idea that the surface of the earth is made of rock that exist is numerous crumpled and broken rocky plates that can be enormous. These plates move. That movement, causes earthquakes. A few months ago, on August 14 th 2021, the nearby island of Haiti was rocked by a massive earthquake. Watch ( https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e_E58OMDl5o ) as Dr. Wendy Bohon, an earthquake scientist and science communicator with the Incorporated Research Institutions for Seismology, discusses what was known of the earthquake by scientists far away in the first few minutes after the earthquake occurred. Questions: What day was this video livestreamed? (1 point) August 14, 2021 What preliminary magnitude was the earthquake estimated to be? (1 point) 7.2 magnitude Approximately how many people live on Haiti? (1 point) 22 million people Did the earthquake occur out under the ocean or on land? (1 point) on land
The earthquake apparently happened in the same area as what other 21 st century seismic event? (2 points) The magnitude 7.0 earthquake in 2010 on the Enrique fault line What are many homes and business in Haiti made of and why? (5 points) They are made out of concrete blocks to help them from hurricanes, however, they cannot withstand the effects of earthquakes due to the way it'll cause the blocks to shift and break underneath themselves. Listen to Dr. Bohon’s brief description of what causes earthquakes. Please write an explanation in your own words for why earthquakes occur, and keep in mind that you will have many opportunities to increase what you know about things like earthquakes this semester. A good explanation uses terms like crust, shaking, friction, movement, and plate boundary. (9 points) Earthquakes occur due to tectonic plates underneath the crust of the earth. For example, earthquakes erupt in places called subduction boundaries, where one plate tries to slide underneath another. The sliding plate gets stuck and creates much more force trying to push it underneath the plate. Finally, the plate forces itself under the other and pushes so hard it causes the area on top of that plate boundary to shake. The more force used, the worse the shaking/magnitude the earthquake is. But this is not the only way that earthquakes occur. They also happen due to strike slip boundaries, which is where the movement of the plates are sliding past each other, instead of under. This sliding creates a lot of friction between the two plates, so this friction results in shaking on top of this plate boundary, meaning it has created an earthquake. Watch the following news feed about what the earthquake meant for people on the ground in Haiti: ABC News https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-KzCYgx4URM What do you imagine will be the effects of a tropical storm with high winds and heavy rainfall on an earthquake damaged zone like this? Consider scenes from the video and describe what would change. Write 5-6 logical sentences. (5 points) I would imagine the effects of a tropical storm like this would be even more disastrous due to the fact many are now without homes and lots of roads are already blocked off. People and first responders are already unable to travel quickly, so this storm would make it even harder to travel as easily as they did before to other places to keep them safe and help people. In Haiti only a few places may still be standing, or partly standing as the earthquake destroyed so many homes and buildings. So with the buildings already being damaged, the high winds and rain will more than likely knock other homes down and flood areas that are blocked in from debris on the roads, or just flood them due to high amounts of rain. The damage to buildings may even cause the death rate of the people in Haiti to rise as more homes and areas will be destroyed. So those currently without homes or are injured will have no place to hide and shelter themselves from the rain and wind, so it’s going to
more than likely make hospitals crowded if they were even still standing or if they can even remain standing. So this tropical storm is just going to make it hard for the people in Haiti as many are already injured and left homeless with no time to fix buildings before this next storm. By the time you are taking this lab, Tropical Storm Grace will have already passed over Haiti. Spend a few minutes on online news sources to get an idea what happened in this area last August. Describe some of what you found here and include a link to your news source: (5 points) Some of the things that I found include lots of flooding and mudslides within Haiti as the rain was expected to be/was between 10 & 12 inches. Many people were too afraid to stay in their homes as the earthquake already damaged them, but the storm made it even worse. They were afraid their homes may collapse on them due to the aftershocks and flooding that occurred, so many opted to sleep in tents and under tarps outside. The storm raised the death toll and the amount of damage that had occurred, they stated in cities 50% of buildings were destroyed while in rural areas 80% had been destroyed. The already blocked roads were now blocked even worse, so this would make it even harder for first responders and people to travel around. Hospitals were completely full but could not hold everyone seeking shelter, the whole area in Haiti needed to be saved. They were out of power, many died, lots of flooding/landslides, they needed food/water, clothes, etc. Tropical Storm Grace wreaked havoc over the already destroyed Haiti and killed more people/made many more homeless/and took away their basic essentials in such an awful way, it truly left the place in devastation.
