Lab 7: Spring 2024 Lab 7: Geologic Time and Relative Dating Methods Online Supplement Name:_____________________ (TA Use: raw score________/21) Grade _______/100 Directions: We will use the online virtual trip portal at vft.asu.edu again for this online supplement. You should read through the questions at the end of this document before you begin so you know what you are looking for. Find the Grand Canyon VFT at the website and then navigate to the “Layers and Superposition” activity that looks like the image below. After clicking “Explore this iVFT”, find the following screen below and then click “Start”. Carefully read each prompt after you click start. You will want to watch every video and click on every potential feature you can go to in the interactive pictures of the Grand Canyon.
Lab 7: Spring 2024 Exploring Blacktail Canyon in the Grand Canyon: One of the first things you can do is to explore each of the layers of the Grand Canyon. Here you will find discussion of fossils in those layers, the names of the layers and an approximate age of each rock layer. Take notes on the information supplied in the videos! You will be answering questions about them soon. For example, in the image below you can see there are 3 videos to watch. The videos Zoom into the rock face while Professor Semken is discussing some key concepts about those layers. You can also use the following diagrams for reference: Stratigraphy of the Grand Canyon
Lab 7: Spring 2024 Turn in: To receive credit for this online supplement, take a screenshot of the completion certificate when you have answered all of the questions correctly and upload it to the eLC Lab 7 Online Supplement. If you miss a question, take a look at the information provided that will help you determine why you made a mistake and you can fix your response (10 points). Based on what you learned in the videos and discussion, answer the following questions. What color is the actual rock of the Redwall Limestone? (2 points) Which three rock layers are Cambrian? (3 points) Of these three, which one was a beach in the Cambrian (1 point)? Describe in your own words how the rock layers tell time in this part of Arizona in the Grand Canyon. Include 4 examples of the environment a sedimentary rock layer represents (match a name, like Tapeats, to the environment you describe based on the videos). Also include the total range of time (in number of years) of the flat-lying sedimentary rocks of the Grand Canyon as described in the VFT. (5 points)
