Geol/Envs 111: Geology and the Environment Assignment/Lab 1 (25 Points) Chapter 3: Minerals and Rocks This chapter covers some amazing topics; my favorite one is minerals. For a lab, however, we are going to focus on something else that I totally dig – rocks. Understanding of the three major rock types is important in understanding the landscapes around you. List them here (the 3 rock types) and describe in your own words how they were created. (6 points) 1. Igneous - these rocks form when a volcano erupts and the lava cools underground. 2. Metamorphic - found deep underground, heat changes the composition 3. Sedimentary - formed from other elements such as sand, seashells and clay that create layers and eventually compress to create a rock. Field Trip 1. Describe your rock: a. Color (1 point) i. Dark gray with rust red areas on exterior b. Size of your rock (1 point) i. Large rock was approximately 23” x 12” ii. Rock I took home is 1.75” c. Smooth or rough? (1 point) i. Rough, gritty. d. Any crystals? If yes, big or small? (1 point) i. No e. Holes or bubbles (regular or occasional)? (1 point) i. Yes, occasional
f. Other unique features (1 point) i. Large rock had very interesting textures, some areas were very smooth and other areas were more rough. 2. Area of bedrock you took it from (include a map) (4 points) 3. Include a picture here: (4 points) a. 4. Of the three rock types, which one do you think yours falls into? Why? (5 points)
a. I think that the rock I found is a sedimentary rock because of the gritty texture and the brittleness. I am able to break small pieces off of the rock and grind them into small particles. I believe that this rock may be a limestone.
