PROJECT MEMORANDUM
TO: Engineering Geology, Inc.
FROM: Benjamin Swanson
PROJECT: Morning Sun Site Evaluation
SUBJECT: Desk Study and Preliminary Information for Morning Sun AFO
Discussion:
Our company has been retained by Morning Sun Animal Feeding Operation to provide a preliminary
investigation for a potential animal feed lot and waste storage facility near Morning Sun, Iowa and the
Port Louisa Wildlife Refuge. Attached to this memo is an aerial view of the site located along Highway
61 and 40
th
St., east of Morning Sun. In order to better plan our potential services for the client, I need the
following information:
1. What types of engineering geological information would you recommend be
investigated and evaluated? What information sources should we reference or obtain?
2. What is the general vegetation on and around the property (crops, grazing, forest)? What is the
topography like? Are the landuse/vegetation and topography related?
3. What is the underlying geological formation at the site and what is the general
Geologic setting? Does rock appear to be deep or shallow? What are the soils like? Are they sandy or
clayey? Are there maps for these items or do we need to drill? If there are maps, please include them
(screen shots are fine).
Soil survey data can be obtained from the NCRS website soil survey at:
http://websoilsurvey.nrcs.usda.gov/app/WebSoilSurvey.aspx
Iowa geology can be obtained from numerous places…check Dr. Google or other sources from
your lecture 2 slides.
4. Can you tell from the available sources what the groundwater and surface water are doing? Is the
groundwater close to the surface? Will surface runoff accumulate quickly or seep into the groundwater
(think about the soils)? Where will it flow to and what is downstream?
5. Are there any potential geohazards that would impact a project or possible impacts from the project on
or near the site that can be identified before field work begins? If there are, what is the nature of these
hazards?
6. Is the area suitable for a development of this kind?
Please return your one to three page memo (keep it brief, bullets are fine but with full thoughts, intros,
etc.) and any maps to me by Friday of next week, as I have a meeting with our client in mid-September to
discuss our scope of work for field investigations. Please provide pertinent maps of this area documenting
your findings and identifying potential problems for our field geologist’s initial survey work. Your work
will have a direct bearing on the investigation that we propose to our client. Thank you very much for
your help.
