The Rock Cycle
Directions: Using your knowledge of rock types and the processes that form and change them, draw a simple rock cycle in the space below, starting with MAGMA at the TOP. Label each rock/material and place labeled directional (process) arrows between each rock type to show how they can change from one type into another. Recall that some processes can be shown between more than one pair of rock types. You will find your previous rock labs helpful. You may use any other source but you must give a citation(s) and you may not just copy one that you find on the internet. This diagram may be drawn and written by hand or using a digital drawing program. It may be in color or black and white, simple or elaborate. You will be graded on content and well as neatness and readability. When you have completed your diagram, answer the questions on the following page in complete sentences.

Rock Cycle Questions:
1.
Explain one way in which a metamorphic rock could become a sedimentary rock. Metamorphic rocks are subject to weathering processes near the surface, which could lead to their dissolution into sediment.
2.
Which type of rock forms only from the solidification of magma?
Magma is a heated, partially molten rock that ranges in temperature from 600 to 1,300 °C (1,100 to 2,400 °F). It solidifies to produce igneous rocks.
3.
After rocks are changed by the processes of weathering and erosion what do they become?
Rocks at or near the earth's surface are broken down into ever-tinier fragments by weathering, which is the breakdown of rock, and erosion, which is the movement of rock
material. Sand, silt, or mud are examples of tiny rock fragments that can be deposited as sediments and eventually harden or lithify to form sedimentary rocks.
4.
Describe the shortest path for an igneous rock to become a metamorphic rock.
An igneous rock compacts and changes into a metamorphic rock when enormous amounts of heat and pressure are applied to it.
5.
What are the three ways that a sedimentary rock can be changed and what is the result of each change? 1. Temperature and/or force 2. Erosion and weathering Melting 3. The sedimentary rock will change into a metamorphic rock due to pressure and heat.
6.
Explain the process that must take place for an igneous rock to become a sedimentary rock. Through erosion, deposition, compaction, and weathering, igneous rocks can transform into sedimentary rocks.
7.
What type of rock is always formed when another type of rock undergoes heat and pressure? When rocks are exposed to extreme temperatures, high pressures, hot fluids rich in minerals, or, more frequently, any combination of these conditions, metamorphic rocks are formed.
