1.
The Pacific Coasts of Mexico and Central America are geologically related due to
the fact that they are
located in a region where
five tectonic plates interact in the
Mexican Republic: the North American, Cocos, Pacific, Rivera and Caribbean
plates. This region is also known as the “Ring of Fire”.
2.
Due to the San Andreas fault, there are a large number of earthquakes in the Gulf of
California. Because the earthquakes are not deep, this points to a transform
boundary.
3.
The chain of earthquakes are due to the Motagua and Polochic faults in the
region. These faults indicate a transform boundary.
4.
Based on the map the distribution of volcanoes and earthquakes decrease as I move
east from Costa Rica to Panama.
5.
The Nazca Plate is moving in a Northeastern direction.
6.
The shield volcano is the most common one in this region.Based on the text the
magma type consist of many successive flows of low-viscosity basaltic lava but lack
significant amounts of pyroclastic debris.
.
7.
Based on earthquake activity I think that a divergent boundary sits between the
Galapagos and Panama. The plates seem to be moving apart from one another in
this region.
8.
The most common volcano is this region is the stratovolcano.
9.
Based on the earthquake distribution a convergent boundary may be present as
these boundaries form stratovolcanoes. The Nazca, Cocos, and South American
Plate converge in this region.
10. Stratovolcanoes produce a viscous magma that contains trapped gasses usually
causing explosive eruptions.
11. The Turriabla volcano might have the biggest impact on San Jose due to proximity.
Heavy ash and gasses from the eruption would be hazards to the densely populated
city.
