Unit 4 Assignment Part 1:
(2.5 points)
Five types of evidence for Wegener's theory are displayed. Review each of the evidence types.
Then, in a minimum of two sentences for each type, describe the evidence proposed
.
Jigsaw Fit – Wegener’s theory displayed that the shorelines of fit together like a giant set
of puzzle pieces. It was later modified to state that the outer boundary of each continent
could be placed next to one another by each of the pieces.
Tectonic Fit
-
The evidence proposed that the continents fit together like
the pieces of a jigsaw puzzle like the Jigsaw Fit. The continental pieces
are consistently moving at a slow shifting rate due to the tectonic
plates of Earth.
Fossil Evidence
– Wegener's theory proposed fossils found in different countries were alike,
indicating that at some point the continents were once attached to one another.
Geological Fit
– The evidence proposed that the geological features, such as landmasses like
mountain belts, form a continuous belt if placed together.
Glacial Deposits
–
Wegener's theory suggested that some of the southern
continents were joined together near the South Pole, showing the polar
conditions needed to create vast areas of ice.
Then, for each of the scientists listed on the site, describe how their ideas caused the original
theory to evolve into what we know today.
(2.5 points)
Harry Hammond Hess
– The scientist Harry Hammond Hess theorized “seafloor spreading”. It
carries off older sediment and fossils and moves the continents as new ocean crust spreads away
from the ridges
.
Frederick Vine and Drummond Matthews
– The two scientists proposed the idea of plate
tectonics. It suggested that the large plates of the Earth are in motion, at a slow rate. It is called
the continental drift. The continental drift was also a huge advancement in connection to
Wegener’s drift.
John Tuzo-Wilson
– This scientist proposed the idea that plates move over fixed hotspots in the
mantle to form volcanic islands, like Hawaii. John proposed transform vaults. The movement of
plants can cause intensive earthquakes and volcanic activity.
Dan McKenzie
– McKenzie proposed that the mantle had two layers. The proposal put fourth
that both layers of the mantle were composed of hot, liquid material consistently moving. The
motion of both layers, or the convection current, is responsible for the movement of the tectonic
plates. As this further supports the continental drift.

Unit 4 Assignment Part 2:
(5 points)
As part of this task, you will be creating a Google drawing (you may use other programs to
create this, or hand draw them, if you wish) of the following types of plate boundaries. Be sure
to label each of your diagrams and include the continental crust, lithosphere, and
asthenosphere. Be sure to PDF or provide screenshots of your work. DO NOT paste an image
from an internet search. It MUST be drawn.

Unit 4 Assignment Part 4:

1. If a soil survey tells you that you have a ‘sandy clay loam’ on your property, what does your
soil have in most abundance: sand, silt or clay?
More abundance of sand.
2. If you send your soil out for a test and find out that it contains 75% silt and 25% clay, what
kind of soil do you have?
Pure Loam
3. Pure loam is considered to be the best kind of soil for a farm or garden and is often defined as
a soil with roughly equal proportions of sand, silt, and clay. Is that what the diagram shows?
