Cochise College Geology 101 Instructor: J. Deakin The Deepest Place on Earth Follow up discussion worksheet. Take notes during the film. Use what you have learned to address the following questions. 1. What type of lithospheric plate boundary is the Marianas Trench? A convergent boundary 2. How deep is the Trench? It has a depth of 11,034 meters 3. For a long time Scientists believed that no life could exist under the crushing pressures of the ocean in the Marianas Trench. Did Piccard and Walsh find life in the Trench while in the Trieste? If so what kind? Yes, they found bottom dwelling flat fish at the bottom of the trench. 4. What ramifications did this life discovery have on the field of Biological/Ecological Science? The rammification of this means that life could exist in high pressure environments 5. How does the sea floor record changes in the Earth’s Polarity?magma between the tetonic plates changed the sea floor record when the rock is hot. 6. What is the connection between the trench and the East Pacific Rise? They run parallel to each other and at opposite ends of the pacific plate. 7. What type of geologic features did scientists find along the East Pacific Rise (and Atlantic Ridge) that proved crucial evidence of sea floor spreading? The zebra stripes which were spreading more than 2 inches per year. 8. How do geologists know that ocean crust is being subducted in the Marianas Trench? The mariana Trench islands are the geological feature that scientists found as evidence since they break through the oceans surface 200 miles away from the trench. 9. Why hadn’t any major earthquakes ever been recorded in the Marianas Trench?Because of mud volcanoed that erupt at the western ridge of the trench that acts as a form of lubricant that preserves earthquakes.
10. Why is the challenger deep more than 2 miles deeper than the rest of the Marianas trench?a piece of crust breaking away from the pacific plates edge sinks vertically due to the mantle moving around it. 11. Is it possible that there are other trenches that are deeper than the Marianas? Why or Whynot? Yes, because 80% of our ocean has not been explored so it is possible that theres deeper waters out there.
