Dante’s Peak Movie Questions Disasters: Geology vs. Hollywood Introduction A volcanologist arrives at a countryside town recently named the second most desirable place to live in America, and discovers that the long dormant volcano, Dante's Peak, may wake up at any moment. -imdb.com Learning Objectives ● Critically assess the portrayal of science, forecasting, and eruptive behavior of Dante’s Peak inthe movie Dante’s Peak (1997). (4, b) Part 1: Watch the movie As you are watching the video clips, look for the answers to the following questions. 1. In the opening scene of Dante’s Peak, Harry and his girlfriend are trying to escape during a volcanic eruption. Visibility is poor because of falling volcanic ash. Do volcanoes really produce ash? How can rocks burn/melt? Yes Volcanoes produce ash. The ash is microscopic fragments of volcanic rock. Some rocks can melt exposed to heat. When rocks in the mantle reach certain temps above their melting point they can turn into molten rock or magma. Magma rises slowly towards the surface because it is less dense compared to the rock around it. Rock can also melt when coming in contact with other molten rock. This is conduction. 2. What volcanic hazard kills Harry’s girlfriend? Fire rocks or pyroclastics. One of the rocks that came from the volcanoe fell through the rough of their car through marianes head. This rock was made from magma shooting to the surface and cooling rapidly 3. When Harry, the mayor, and her kids visit Grandma’s cabin, there is foreshadowing of disaster. List at least four signs (precursors) that Dante’s Peak is about to awaken. Earthquakes. bulge and explosions to the surface. volcanic smoke rising into the air, volcanic ash pouring, volcanic lightning, dead fish from volcanic activity turning the lake to acid, lava pouring 4. Describe anything you saw in these clips that you think might be scientifically questionable. Earthquakes were too big and random instead of starting from small earthquakes then gradually getting bigger 5. Explain Harry’s “proof” that Dante’s Peak is a “ticking time bomb?” his proof was that there was sulfur dioxide in the towns water. A huge earthquake happened during a meeting at the school. When he is discussing an evacuation plan an earthquake happens causing panic in the town. Harry then thinks that the volcano is a ticking time bomb.
6. What caused the helicopter crash? volcanic ash caused the engine to fail basically clogged it up. The pilot lost control. 7. The film shows our hero et al. riding a boat that is rapidly dissolving in a lake made acidic by the volcano. What part do you think is real, and where has Hollywood exaggerated to create drama? The boat dissolving from the acid was correct not enough to dissolve a boat on impact. They also wouldn’t be able to out run lava of that viscosity moving that fast 8. Harry dramatically drives through a lava flow. Do you think this is possible? Provide a couple sentences to explain your reasoning. No I personally think that it’s just common sense that not one car would drive through lava at that temperature without exploding or rusting into flames. 9. In the end, did the order of volcanic hazards make sense? Does something not add up? What, if anything, is out of place? The boat scene. Acid from volcanic activity can’t spread that fast in a lake.
