Lab 3 – Minerals GEOL 1121 Name: Cheikh Tanko Activity 2 Uses of Minerals With the chart in the resource document provided in iCollege as a guide, dig deeper into your understanding of the properties of minerals by identifying how we use them in our lives. You’ll explore a selection of minerals, products of minerals, and then provide your reasoning as to why each particular mineral is matched to specific products . For example, a diamond has a hardness of 10. So, if I provided the blade of a band saw as an example item in this activity, you might describe how in order for the saw to cut into hard materials, it would need to be made up of a mineral that was the hardest of them all! Hardness is only one of the properties that you could use in your reasoning to match items to minerals, so be sure to look at the chemical formulas for clues and consider other properties as well. Note that you may not have seen all of these minerals in lab, but you are welcome to go about your research using Google. Good luck! INSTRUCTIONS: There are 15 minerals to choose from as listed in the “minerals in our everyday lives” guide. You only have to correctly match TEN of the minerals provided in the guide to the below items and state your reasoning as to why this mineral is used for these products and how you came to know that answer (e.g., diamonds are used in saw blades because they are the hardest mineral and can be useful in cutting through many materials). You should use the rest of the hand out and Google to determine the reason the mineral is used for this purpose. Remember: it does not have to be because of the hardness. Mineral Products Mineral Name Why THIS Mineral? Toothpaste Fluorite It performed a significant influence in eliminating cavities and enhancing people's overall health. Sandpaper, Glass Almandine Because it is sharper and tougher than finer-grain quartz. Table Salt Halite Because it contains several beneficial nutrients that boost the general health of the human body. Jewelry Gold Because it is really valuable. Baby Powder Talc On the Mohr scale, it is the softest mineral. Pencils Graphite Because of its dark tone, it is ideal for writing on paper. Drywall Gypsum Is a strong and fire-resistant building material. Sparkly Eye Shadow Micas Because of the brilliance in the crystal, it is manufactured from synthetic fluorphlogopite. Antacids Magnesium Several salts can neutralize acid and alleviate your discomfort. Ceramics, Glossy Paper, Anti-Diarrheal Kaolin/Feldspa Operates as a flux, reducing the melting temperature of a mixture.
Lab 3 – Minerals GEOL 1121 Name: Cheikh Tanko Medicine r Duracell Battery Zinc When compared to ammonium chloride electrolyte, it has a longer life and a more consistent voltage output. Aluminum Foil Bauxite Because this can yield pure aluminum oxide known as alumina. Microdermabrasion Corundum Bactericidal property due to its rough, uneven surface. Skin Care Iron oxide/talc etc. Creates a thicker base on the skin, resulting in reduced pigmentation. Fertilizer Gypsum It is crushed and refined by removing rock and salt particles. Green Fireworks Barite Because f its ability to stabilize other elements.
