ERSC 1P01 –Planet Earth I – Minerals
This is a two (2) week IN PERSON LAB (attend week of Jan. 15th AND
week of Jan. 22nd)
ASSIGNMENT DUE 31 hours after your week 2 (week of Jan 22nd) ‘IN PERSON LAB’ i.e. 11:59 PM the next day
Objectives:
To gain familiarity with the common rock-forming and economically important minerals essential to the identification of rocks. In addition, the process of mineral identification will give you practice in careful observation and the systematic approach to problem solving.
General Instructions:
PRE-LAB INSTRUCTIONS
1.
Go to the Content>Lab Material>Lab 1: Minerals page in Brightspace. A PDF document describing the Physical properties of minerals is available for you to download.
2.
The main physical properties of minerals will be explained and demonstrated further
in mini-video demonstrations. Make sure to watch each video BEFORE you attend your IN PERSON lab session to fully understand how to recognize each physical property which you will then be asked to identify and describe in this assignment. You may want to take notes as you watch the videos! 3.
We will be reviewing the physical properties during the IN PERSON lab session. You may also bring your own laptop/tablet AND HEADPHONES to your IN PERSON lab sessions to rewatch and review the videos. 4.
During the first week (part 1) of the Minerals lab (week of Jan 15th) we will review: Hardness, Colour, Streak, Diaphaneity, Lustre.
5.
During the second week (part 2) of the Minerals lab (week of Jan 22nd) we will review:
Cleavage, Striations, Fracture, Crystal form, Specific gravity, Tenacity, Magnetism, Reaction to 10% HCl, Identifying name of mineral
6.
There are two assignment question documents provided for you. This document contains all of the questions. The second document (available for Minerals Part 2) lists the physical properties in a TABLE format and the specific sample properties you
are asked to identify are numbered within the table. You may print the documents and bring paper copies to your IN PERSON lab OR you may wish to work directly from your own computer/tablet. (NOTE: Paper copies will NOT be provided in your lab session!)
7.
Questions in this document related to physical properties covered in Minerals Week 1 (Week of January 15th) have been highlighted in YELLOW. Questions (in this 1
ERSC 1P01 (Planet Earth – Solid Earth) – Minerals lab (enter answers in Quizzes tool)
document) related to properties covered in Minerals Week 2 (Week of January 22nd)
have been ‘
italicized
’. 8.
On Saturday, January 20th (12:01 am) a Mineral ID Table will be posted provided for you. This table contains overall descriptions for some common minerals. You will use this table during the week 2 Minerals IN PERSON lab to determine the MINERAL NAME! Note: The descriptions in the Mineral ID Table provide overall-general desciptions of minerals. Colour and streak descriptions often use ‘designer’ descriptions, which you should
not use as your answers! Use your own words! *The mineral samples will be provided in your ‘IN PERSON’ lab session. You must attend your scheduled ‘IN PERSON’ lab session in order to answer the questions and submit this assignment. If you do not attend an ‘IN PERSON’ lab session but still attempt to submit answers to this assignment this will be considered a violation of Brock’s academic misconduct policy
. SUBMITTING YOUR ASSIGNMENT DURING/AFTER YOUR IN PERSON LAB SESSION
9.
The Minerals lab will become available for each individual lab section in the Quizzes tool at 5:00 pm on the day of your Scheduled IN PERSON lab the week of January 22nd and will be due by 11:59 pm the following day. 10. When you have answered all of your assignment questions you will then go to enter the answers in the ‘Quizzes’ tool. Every student will be answering a unique combination of 35 questions randomly drawn from a bank of questions that you have just answered. You only have one opportunity to submit your answers.
Assignment Questions
REMINDER! Please answer all questions before entering your answers under the Quizzes
tool in Brightspace. Each question is worth 1 mark. Total marks = 35 Answer the question for the specific mineral sample provided!
How to answer questions in the ‘Quizzes’ tool?
1.
Some of the questions will have ‘multiple choice’ answers available for you to choose
from. ‘Click’ the correct answer from the list provided. 2.
Some of the questions will require you to write in your answer in either a ‘short answer’ or ‘fill in the blank’ format. You DO NOT need to answer using sentences. ONE (or TWO) word answers are recommended! i.e. Describe the COLOUR of the mineral:
Acceptable answer: Yellow
‘Not recommended’ format for answering this question: The colour of the mineral is yellow.
