1 ERSC 1P01 (Planet Earth I) Igneous Rock lab (enter answers in Quizzes tool) ERSC 1P01 Planet Earth Igneous Rocks (IN PERSON) ASSIGNMENT DUE 31 hours after your ‘IN PERSON LAB’ i.e. 11:59 PM the next day Objectives: The recognition of common igneous textures and igneous rock forming minerals leading to the identification of common igneous rocks by means of an identification key. You will also apply the knowledge and descriptive skills learned in the minerals lab to further develop scientific observational skills. General Instructions: PRE-LAB INSTRUCTIONS 1. Go to the Content>Lab Material>Lab 3: Igneous Rocks page in Brightspace. Videos will review some of the minerals that you saw in Lab 1: Minerals. These are minerals that make up Igneous rocks. In addition the five main Igneous textures will be explained and demonstrated further in mini-video demonstrations. A PDF document describing the Igneous Textures and Igneous Rock groups is also available for you to download. 2. Make sure to watch each video to fully understand how to recognize each Igneous Rock texture, as you will be asked to identify textures during your IN PERSON lab session and they are also the first step to determining the Igneous rock name. You may want to take notes as you watch the videos! 3. We will be reviewing the igneous rock textures during the IN PERSON lab session. You may also bring your own laptop/tablet AND HEADPHONES to your IN PERSON lab sessions to rewatch and review the videos. 4. There is this ONE assignment question document provided for you. This document contains all of the questions for the Igneous Rock samples you will be reviewing in your IN PERSON lab session. At the END of this document is an Igneous Rock Table which lists the questions in a TABLE format. 5. There is also an IGNEOUS ROCK ID KEY provided for you in a separate PDF document. This ID KEY contains steps on how to identify each Igneous rock as well as overall descriptions for the igneous rocks. You will use this ID KEY during your IN PERSON lab session to determine the IGNEOUS ROCK NAME! You may print the documents and bring paper copies to your IN PERSON lab OR you may wish to work directly from your own computer/tablet. (NOTE: Paper copies will NOT be provided in your lab session!) Note: The descriptions in the lGNEOUS ID KEY provide overall-general desciptions of the rock types. Make sure to descibe only what you see in your rock tray sample (do not add information that is not there or marks will be deducted!).
2 ERSC 1P01 (Planet Earth I) Igneous Rock lab (enter answers in Quizzes tool) *The igneous rock samples will be provided in your ‘IN PERSON’ lab session. You must attend your scheduled ‘IN PERSON’ lab session in order to answer the questions and submit this assignment. If you do not attend an ‘IN PERSON’ lab session but still attempt to submit answers to this assignment this will be considered a violation of Brock’s academic misconduct policy . SUBMITTING YOUR ASSIGNMENT AFTER YOUR IN PERSON LAB SESSION 1. The Igneous rock lab will become available for each individual lab section in the Quizzes tool at 5:00 pm on the day of your Scheduled IN PERSON lab and will be due by 11:59 pm the following day. 2. When you have answered all of your assignment questions you will then go to enter the answers in the ‘ Q uizzes’ tool. Every student will be answering a unique combination of thirty (30) questions randomly drawn from a bank of questions that you have just answered. You will have only one (1) opportunity to submit your answers. 3. Each IN PERSON lab section will also be given a unique set of five (5) questions to answer. The questions and associated igneous rock samples will ONLY be provided during the IN PERSON lab session. Assignment Questions REMINDER! Please answer all questions before entering your answers in the Brightspace Quizzes tool. Each question is worth 1 mark. Total marks = 35 (30 mks from random draw of questions + 5mks for questions from each in person lab section). Answer the question for the specific igneous rock sample provided! How to answer questions in the ‘ Q uizzes’ tool? 1. Some of the questions will have ‘multiple choice’ answers available for you to choose from. ‘Click’ the correct answer from the list provided. 2. Some of the questions will require you to write in your answer in a ‘short answer’ or ‘fill in the blank’ format. You DO NOT need to answer using sentences. ONE (or two) word answers are recommended! The following is the list of questions that you will be answering for this assignment. We have also provided you with an Igneous Rock Table at the end of this document.
