Module 8. Reconstructing Geologic History 99 Name____________________________________ MODULE 8 Worksheet 8A.
Using the principles of relative dating, determine the sequence of events that occurred to form the rock arrangement shown in the cross section in Figure 8-4. List the events from oldest
at the bottom of the list to youngest
at the top of the list. Sequence of Events (oldest at bottom of list; youngest at top of list) Justify Your Chosen Sequence By Describing Each Unit’s Relationship To The Other Units Worksheet 8B.
Answer the following questions about the animations and photographs. Examine the animation of the seas moving in and out. If you found a place where a marine mud layer overlies a beach sandstone, do you think that sea level was rising or dropping (transgressing or regressing)? In the Hance Rapids photograph, what is the oldest rock unit and why? In the Death Valley photograph, which rock unit is younger, the tilted gray layers or the upper layer with the angular clasts? Give at least two reasons why. Abhikya Reddy Ananth

River gravel is younger than erosion
Intrusion of magma will crosscut older ones as a dike Erosion is younger than the rock layers in canyon walls older layers are at the bottom and the youngest ones are at the bottom older than A, rock layer is exposed in canyon wall overlying sub-horizontal layers above tilted layers Angular Unconformity
Fault is younger than the other features it crosscuts younger layer than F due to being above due to being above it is younger than H
Younger than I due to being above oldest layer because of being located at the bottom
In a marine transgression scheme, a beach sandstone
body underlain by marine mud can be found (sea level rising). Since mud is accumulated in a marine environment,
as the sea level rose, sandstone was first deposited,
followed by mud.
The horizontal beds are the oldest rocks in the Hance rapid photograph.
A dike is a discordant igneous primary structure
that cuts through older horizontal beds.
The upper layer with the angular clast in the Death Valley photograph is the younger rock layer. Since this rock layer was initially known as Breccia. A tilted layer exists under the brecciated layer, indicating an angular unconformity that is much older than the brecciated layer. The units were initially horizontal, then angled, resulting in an unconformity and debris flow. This brecciated layer has been laid down.
The second explanation is that this rock unit includes older rock materials, such as angular igneous and metamorphic rock fragments,
which are bounded by young sediments.
