Atmospheric Humidity Activity
DeFever, Camden
Explain why the wet adiabatic lapse rate is smaller than the dry adiabatic lapse rate.
The wet adiabatic lapse rate is less than the dry one because moist air rises and condenses
water vapor.
How is the lapse rate defined?
-
The rate at which temperature changes with height in the Atmosphere
What happens as an air parcel moves up in the atmosphere?
-
As an air parcel rises in the atmosphere, it expands, which causes the temperature of the
air parcel to decrease.
What happens to the relative humidity, and why?
-
Relative humidity decreases because colder air doesn't require as much moisture to
become saturated as warmer air.
What happens at the level of condensation?
-
A parcel becomes saturated at the level of condensation.
What happens when the air continues to rise?
-
When air rises, Its humidity increases until it reaches 100%
Part 2
What areas have high humidity and what areas have low humidity?
The Midwest, Southeast, and Gulf Coast are examples of coastal regions with high humidity.
Miami and New Orleans, for example, have significant humidity levels. On the other hand, dry
regions like the Southwest, which includes Arizona and portions of California, as well as
mountainous regions like the Rockies, are more likely to have low humidity. Higher humidity is
typically found in coastal locations and warm climates, whilst lower humidity is typically found
in desert and hilly areas. Pretty much the right side of the map has a high humidity while the left
side of map has a low humidity.
How are these regions different?
Like I said, areas above low humidity are usually found in areas like deserts and hilly areas while
high humidity is found in coastal locations and warm climates.
What factors control humidity?
Some factors that control humidity are air movement, air temperature, and warm bodies of water.
Explain the map.
The map shows the current relative humidity within the area. The different colors show the
different temperatures evolving. The red represents dry, hot areas, and the blue represents humid
areas.
