Quiz - Treats to International Travel Please answer the following questions. Short answers are sufficient. (10 points) 1. What was your reaction after reading the section on Antarctica in Chapter 7 of Edgell and Swanson (2018)? (1 point) My initial reaction upon reading the section on Antarctica from Chapter 7 of the textbook is that I hadn’t even realized Antarctica experienced tourism at all, outside of those scientists and researchers who frequent the region on expeditions funded by their governments. Furthermore, seeing as Antarctica is much more susceptible to the changes caused by climate change (compared to the rest of the world), it is not at all surprising to see how significantly tourism affects the region's ecology, even with such limited traffic. 2. What are some of the challenges to tourism as a commercial activity in Antarctica? (2 points) The first obvious challenge to tourism as a commercial activity in Antarctica is the climate and weather conditions. Antarctica has some of the coldest year round temperatures in the world, making it unideal for the majority of tourists. Furthermore, Antarctica is almost exclusively subject to sea-bound accessibility, which means tourism would really be quite limited based on availability and seasonal conditions. In sum, safety concerns are always prevalent due to the blistering weather. Not only that, but a limited amount of infrastructures, paired with the high environmental impacts of increasing the number of infrastructures would be quite substantial. . 3. What is the Antarctic Treaty System and why is it important? (1 points) The Antarctic Treaty System acts as the document, or list of provisions, outlining those countries which have claims towards utilizing Antarctica for scientific purposes, and the rules of which those scientists from participating countries must adhere to. This system is important in reducing the environmental impacts of technology and human processes on Antarctica, whilst ensuring that all processes which do take place are non-harmful to its ecology and beneficial to furthering scientific inquiry. 4. What policy recommendations would you propose for managing future tourism in Antarctica? Please provide two recommendations (2 points) Some policy recommendations that I might propose for managing future tourism in Antarctica include increased stringency of regulations regarding visitor capacities and waste management, along with increased funding specifically towards research and assessing the environmental impacts of tourism on the region. By allocating more money towards researching the impacts of tourism, the Antarctic government can more effectively manage capacity, waste, and visitor conduct. 5. Do you think terrorist attacks will take place in the future and continue to impact on tourism? If so, why? If not, why not? (Reference Edgell & Swanson (2018), Chapter 12) (2 points)
Sadly, I definitely don’t believe that we’ve seen the end of terrorist attacks for the foreseeable future. With that being said, terrorist attacks, along with the apprehensive feelings developed by governments and societies around the world as a result of such attacks, will surely continue to impact tourism if and when they occur again. Supply chain shutdowns, terminations of government contracts, and of course a global decrease in tourism, are just a few of the many substantial impacts that terrorist attacks have on the economy. 6. After months of limiting travel during a global pandemic, Hawaii decided to open up travel on October 15, 2020. Do you support this decision? Please explain your answer. (2 points) At the time, I did agree with the decision to re-open travel. However, being that I’ve always been a service industry worker, whether it be as a hotel valet or restaurant server, this might make me biased on the matter. Having lost my job like many others, even outside of the hospitality industry, it was another few months (even after travel was reopened) before I got called back to my hotel job at the time. In my opinion, the state of Hawaii, from large corporations to locally-owned businesses are all so dependent on the money stimulated by tourism whether we like it or not. Having said that, I fully supported the state’s decision to re-open travel at the time. .
