Reflection Questions- Article 1 1. Using the simulation, describe what happens to groundwater when pumping is lower or equal to the rate of infiltration. Not that much groundwater is being sucked up. 2. Using the simulation, describe what happens to the stream and water table as the number of pumps running is increased. The amount of groundwater starts to decrease. 3. How can water needs be met if the rate of infiltration is lower than the rate of pumping? If the infiltration rates are lower than there needs to be less pumping because there is going to be less water already because of the runoff that infiltration creates and then there wouldn’t be as much ground water for the roots of crops 4. In the simulation, what happened to the stream as the water table dropped? What will happen to the groundwater if a pollutant is added to the stream? The stream started to get lower and lower and if it was pollutant was added then the water would even become unsafe for usage 5. Predict long-term changes to the surface landscape of the area if too much water is drawn from the ground and the water table drops further . There could possibly be no more water to be drawn from since the groundwater is the main source of water so there needs to be a limit to help preserve the usages of all the water that is being used. Reflection Questions- Article 2 1. How long did the initial contamination of the Hudson River last? It lasted for 30 years 2. Why did contamination continue and spread after the initial contamination was stopped?
Since all the contamination was properly disposed and wasn’t fully clear there was still contamination in the river 3. How did the mass contamination affect wildlife in the area? The fish had to have a limit on how much were able to be catch and a lot of the fish in the river had got contaminated as well which caused a serve decrease of fish. 4. dredging in the Why do you think they limit navigational Hudson? had limited it due to health concerns of the fish especially during the fish season when there tends to be more fish and they don’t want no more fish being contaminated than there is. 5. After a massive clean-up, why will contamination continue for decades after? Because that all the dredged that is in the river wouldn’t be fully taken out and also the fish that are already contaminated are swimming around in the water without a place to go which is just making the water more contaminated.
