Module 1 Map of Massachusetts Nicole McMahon Southern New Hampshire University IT-242-Q7543 Intro to Geographic Info Sys 23EW2 Professor October 29, 2023
The area of focus I chose was Massachusetts, specifically the Cape Cod region. The datasets I added to the map were mainly of flood plain structures, water sources such as lakes, flood hazard areas, and areas where the sea level has risen. I chose this because of the erosion that the coast is threatened by. With the risk of rising sea levels and areas at risk for flooding, coastal areas need to implement systems to reduce the risk of erosion. Another dataset that I added to the map was the sewered areas in Cape Cod. I added this because there are always risk of contamination from sewered areas or wastewater plants. With the Cape Cod being surrounded by bodies of water, there are more risks of them becoming contaminated by runoff from wastewater plants or overflowing from the sewered areas. The metadata that is recorded for the seal level rise is used to help plan to mitigate future risks, and to watch for trends in rising sea levels along the coast (DeConto, Kopp, 2017). By being able to study the data in the map, it gives us an opportunity to watch for trends of rising water levels, erosion, areas at risk of flooding, and therefore, we can come up with a plan to reduce these risks in the future.
