Module 3-4 Source 1
The first source I plan on using for my essay is a report published by the Appalachian Regional
Commission titled “An Overview of Coal and the Economy in Appalachia: Fourth Quarter 2020
update”
(Bowen,
Christiadi
,
Deskins,
Lego,
&
Appalachian Regional Commission (ARC)
,
2021
)
.
It is a report that discusses many aspects of the current situation of the coal industry in
the Appalachian region.
It talks about the coal production forecasts, recent trends, employment
rates, wages, education rates, and a lot of other useful information to help back up my point I
plan to make in the essay, which is to discuss the impact of American Electric Power’s plan to
transition away from coal-fired generation
.
The source is a well known and trusted source.
“The Appalachian Regional Commission (ARC)
is an economic development partnership agency of the federal government and 13 state
governments focusing on 423 counties across the Appalachian Region
”
(
Appalachian Regional Commission
,
2022)
.
This source will help me to show
the importance of coal mining jobs to our stat, and how we can’t just
abandon mining as an industry without the proper infrastructure in place.
I
will try to show the economic impact that another rapid decline in mining
would have on our state.
