Local Habitat & Objective The local habitat that I chose to evaluate for quality and condition is Pepper Park. It is in Ecorse Michigan and the area has become a pivotal point for revitalization in the area. The city has taken an interest in the area as a point of beautification. They have received grants to help with this program from different companies and the state itself. Pepper Park is a total of about five acres of land at minimum that has multipurpose use. There is a baseball field fenced in. It has bleachers that surround it so people can watch baseball games. The baseball field, tennis court, and a basketball court where you can run a full court game. A pavilion with a bench where you can sit. There are also other benches along the trail. It has ample parking as well. Pepper Park runs right next to Ecorse Creek which is a watershed. Pepper Creek and Pepper Park are separated by a tree line. Once you walk up the tree line you can see the creek. The objective of my research is to collect data to evaluate the Ecorse Creek and Pepper Park for the quality and condition of the water and soil, due to all of the traffic that the area see. I conducted several test to attempt to look for the presence of harmful bacteria, water quality, richness of soil, and the diversity of wildlife. I am looking to see if there is anything that could potentially impact the 5 acres of land and the creek that lie alongside it.

Images of Local Habitat Backside of the park where the splash pad is supposed to go. There is a playground that is enclosed by a barrier. Part of Pepper Creek this is a partial of where the stream starts. They is a tree that fell and happens to Partially be blocking the creek. A picture of part of the trail and the parking lot. To the left there is a basketball court and tennis court.
Field Test Conducted Water Quality I collect water samples from the creek. I collected water samples, tested pH levels by dropping a sample on the paper and dropping tabs in the water samples for Nitrate and Phosphate. During this process I learned that no matter how close bodies of water are they all sample different and the cleaner the water was the less acidic the water was. Also learned that even if water was acidic or neutral that they could still share the same results for Nitrate and Phosphate. This testing allows us to do a process of elimination of what could be harming the ecosystem. This allows us to know how safe or dangerous waterways are for human and aquatic life. Materials Used 2 pH strips, 2 Phosphate TesTabs®, Sample comparison chart, 2 Plastic pipet, Collection bottle, 125 mL, Thermometer, 2 Conical tubes, 15 mL, 1 Graduated cylinder, 100 mL, 1 Permanent marker, Aluminum foil (enough to cover conical tube), Stopwatch or timer, GPS or GPS-enabled phone, Cooler with ice (if transporting to complete), Bucket or container for waste disposal (if completing in field), apron, googles, gloves.
Field Test Conducted Soil Testing The main purpose of this field test was to show us how important soil is to the habitat. We’re focused on showing the different types of soil and composition of it. We also tested the pH level, phosphorus level, nitrogen level, and potash level of the soils. The results showed us how to separate the breakdown of soil samples, how acidic water was, and how much nutrients are in the soil. Materials Used sheet of plain paper, liquid hand soap, 2 Soil samples, 1 pair of scissors, distilled water, stopwatch, tap water, 3 Rubber bands, Graduated bands cylinder, 3 plastic tubes, cheesecloth, twist ties, clay, sand, and soil test kit

Limitations / Safety & PPE / Data Limitations that would cause barriers for my field work was construction that was happening in the area. They were currently working on a project to cut down all the trees in the area in hopes of cleaning up the creek and addressing the issues of flooding that it causes. Also, the bad weather we have been getting lately in Michigan. We have not had many steady days at all. The rain, thunder, and lighting would cause delays as well. I was able to work around a lot of the bad weather by proper planning. I would make my field work schedule based on what the weather would look like by the day and week. PPE that was required of my field work. The area that I collected samples from required boots to be worn, long sleeves for arms and legs, goggles, and gloves. The area is very muddy and there are a lot of weeds and shrubs. Some areas the trees have been cut down and other areas they have not. There are also a lot of insects so spraying myself down to keep from being bitten will be a great idea. To keep safe, I will not be able to go to this area anytime there is no light. I also must keep a phone just in case due to the incline to get down to the area. It would also be smart to have someone tag along as well, just for reason of accidentals, tripping and falling into the actual Creek from being in the area. If not, make sure that someone knows where I am or has my exact location. Keep an eye out for wildlife as the area is bordered by the woods and a creek.
Conclusion The test I we performed were to find out how acidic the water was, dissolved oxygen test so that we can find out the type of aquatic life the water would offer, and where or not the bacteria forming is harmful. Along with how much silt and clay were in soil. In conclusion I learned that the land were neutral in numbers but that with the clean up and revitalization that is going on, the species habitat is being damaged and causing a lot of the wildlife to find homes outside of their normal habitat. The area itself should not be harmful to individuals who frequent the area for all the activities and fun that take place. Wildlife for some of the species and Aquatic life looks to be depleting based on how the city is revitalizing. The creek will soon be useful for canoeing again as well.
